Page 80 of Escaping Rejection

I let that idiocy slide. We had bigger things to deal with than Gavin’s crush on Kira.

“Look,” I said, “there’s something big happening. Bigger than this show, or us and our rejections. The only way we can truly know who we’reactuallysupposed to be paired with is to ask Heline herself.”

Of all of us, only J.D. looked relieved. He smiled up at me. “I know you guys are upset, but I’m actually happy.”

“The hell is there to be happy about?” Tate barked.

J.D. shook his head sadly. “When my blood test came back, it said that I was fated to a woman I’d never met. I went to find her, but it turned out she had already met and mated with the love of her life. Everyone said I needed to tear them apart, to assert myself and take her as my mate. The blood test said she was mine fair and square, so they said that meant I should have her. They all said she was with someone she wasn’t supposed to be with.

“When I finally saw her, I could see how happy she was, even from a distance. How in love they were with each other. I couldn’t break them apart, so I rejected her and pissed my pack off in the process. This means I did the right thing. You have no idea how guilty I’ve felt about this. It’s like a weight has been lifted off me.”

“If it’s true,” Tate said, heavy skepticism coloring his tone.

“Right,” J.D. said. “But if it is, that means our real fated mates are still out there somewhere. Waiting for us to find them.”

Those words pierced my mind like an arrow. Waiting for us to find them? What if mine was still waiting for me to find her? Or, what if she’d been right in front of me the whole time?

Could Kira be my fated mate? The thought alone filled me with wonder and hope.

I tamped it down immediately. That was wishful thinking. I was drawn to her because of my feelings. That didn’t necessarily mean we were fated. I had to keep a level head. Once she and I made it off this island alive, we could figure out what it all meant.

“Any of you wonder what’s going on back home?” J.D. asked. He smiled in wonder. “She said all that stuff on live television. Can you imagine the reaction?”

He was right. Kira had tossed a stick of dynamite into an already volatile situation. It had to be done, but there would be chaos.

“I think it’s bad,” I said. “The fact that they have us locked up in here tells us everything. Bad shit. Panic.”

Abel gave me a worried look. “So, uh, is that bad for us?”

“We’ll have to wait and see,” I answered. “Though, I doubt it’ll be good. I think Kira’s speech is going to have a bigger impact than even she thinks.”

“Speaking of Kira,” Tate said, “what the fuck was up with you, Wyatt? Why’d you flip out because she started giving off the barest hint of heat scent? A little heat wave shouldn’t have done that. I thought you were going to rip all our throats out like you did with Von. Kinda scary.”

Tate was spoiling for a fight, but I didn’t rise to the bait. “You guys all reacted, too. Don’t forget.”

“Well, yeah,” Tate said, rolling his eyes. “She was going into heat. Of course we’dreact, but we weren’t ripping fucking throats out.”

There was no point answering him, because I didn’t know why I’d reacted so violently. It reminded me of the day Kira was drugged by the lion shifter. I remembered how painfully I’d wanted her in that parking lot, though this time had been even stronger. Maybe because now I knew what it was like to be with her.

When I’d caught her scent on the roof and realized she was going into heat, my wolf had lost it. It had taken total control of me, something I’d never experienced before. I’d had one single goal—keep the other men away from her. That had included Von. When he’d touched me and stood between Kira and me, my mind had snapped. Was that what being feral was like?

It made me uncomfortable. When I probed my mind to get answers from my wolf, all he gave me was sullen silence. Why the hell had I become so enraged and possessive? The other alphas had reacted less than half as strongly as I had.

When Tate realized I wasn’t going to answer him, he snorted a laugh and lay down on his bed. I did the same. Might as well try to rest. Who knew how long we’d be in here?

The minutes turned into hours. Around the time I was starting to wonder how long they’d keep us locked in here, there was a knock at the door. It opened, and the security guys led in a few staff witches and fae, carrying trays of food.

“I know your dinner was interrupted. Sorry about that. We brought a few things for you to munch on,” one of the witches said.

“How long are we going to be kept here?” Abel asked. “Are we prisoners or something?”

“Right,” Gavin added. “Do they think we’re a threat to Von, or that we’re going to burn the palace down?”

The witch gasped, looking scandalized. “Oh, absolutely not. We’re simply sorting some things out.” She swallowed and bit her lip. “Um, but they have shut the show down temporarily.”

I sat up quickly, surprised by the news. “Seriously?”

The witch looked worried that she’d said anything, but continued. “Yes. A couple of the showrunners have come to the island via magic teleportation. They and Mr. Thornton will be sorting things out fairly quickly. Until then, the leading ladies and all of you will be contained.”
