“Contained? I don’t like the sound of that,” I said.

“Yeah,” Gavin echoed. “Isn’t it going a little overboard to shut the show down and lock us in here?” He pointed at me. “He’s the one who attacked Von. Kick him off so we can get back to it. You can’t keep us here against our will.”

Tate chimed in. “Right, like howcontainedare we, anyway? We could shift and take on almost the whole staff if we really wanted to.”

The staff members glanced at each other nervously, and the security guys became more rigid. One of them inched his hand closer to the concealed holster under his arm. This would go bad fast if I didn’t calm everyone down.

“Hey,” I said to them with a smile. “Don’t mind those guys. It’s in their nature to be pricks. No one is going to attack anyone.”

My words calmed them a bit, though they still looked tense. They finished setting the trays of food on a table near the door. When the staff turned to go, I realized I had one chance to get a message to Kira.

“Excuse me, miss?” I called to a young fae.

“Yes?” she asked.

I hurried over to her. “Can you get a quick message to Kira for me?”

She looked uncomfortable and glanced behind her. The other staff members had gone, though a security guard glared at me for interfering.

“Mr. Thornton doesn’t want any contestants talking right now,” she replied. “Not until things get figured out.”

“I get that, I really do, but this won’t be any kind of message that will get you in trouble. I promise.”

For a moment, I thought she would decline, but then she said, “Okay, what is it?”

I grinned at her. “Thanks. Tell Kira that she’s an annoying little brat, okay?”

The fae’s brow furrowed in confusion. “That’s your message?”

“Yeah.”

“I guess I can do that.”

She hurried out the door, and I turned around to find J.D. gaping at me.

“A brat? Bro, you are the harshest person I’ve ever met. Didn’t you just hear her confess her freaking undying love for you?”

“Oh, I heard her,” I said with a grin. In fact, it was all I could think about.

For once, Gavin wasn’t reacting to my words about Kira. Instead, he said something that chilled my blood. “I think I know why the show’s been shut down.”

“What’s that?” Abel asked.

“To get them to freeze production on this show, especially when we’re so far along, something bad has to have happened. Something momentous.” He glanced around the room at all of us, meeting each of our eyes as he went. “War. I think it may have finally happened.”

Gooseflesh rose on my arms and neck. He might be right. Probably was right. This show was the biggest thing on the planet. To shut it down meant something had to have gone to hell. Immediately, worry welled up in my chest for my unofficial pack and Kolton. If war had finally broken out among the packs, what was happening in the Eleventh Pack’s lands?

The last time we’d spoken, Kolton had mentioned that he had some sort of plan to get Kira and me off the island. That was all well and good, but we had our own plan to stay alive here for the time being.

Kolton needed to focus on his own family and pack. Protecting them should be his main objective, and he shouldn’t be worrying about his sister. I was determined to keep her safe no matter what happened next.

Chapter21

Kira

After some time staring out the window, I decided to do what I could to take my mind off everything. I took a shower, brushed my teeth, and put on more comfortable clothes. But doing all the little mundane things to prepare for bed didn’t help me feel better. Instead, it made the whole situation even more surreal, almost like I was in a dream within a dream.

I paced my room, replaying my speech in my mind over and over again. I didn’t see how I could have added more to it. I didn’t regret doing it. Spur-of-the-moment decisions didn’t usually turn out well for me, but I thought I did good. Someone needed to point out how messed up shifter society had become, how cruel and pointlessThe Reject Projectwas.
