“About what?”

“Chick, I can read you like a book. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were still on that island, looking for danger or monsters around every corner. Enjoy this. You’re home. You’re safe. You’ve got that big slab of man meat undressing you with his eyes every five seconds. Even better, you aren’t a slave to the showrunners anymore. Live it up while you can.”

“Easier said than done.”

Zoe released me. “Look, if your pack wasn’t in the middle of some big standoff right now, you’d better believe I’d be breaking out the margaritas and launching some fae fireworks to celebrate.” Her smile faltered a bit.

“What’s wrong?”

Zoe looked at me, but all her cheeriness had vanished. “Um, I need to go check on my family,” she said. “This whole war is spilling over, and fae tend to end up getting wrapped up in wolf-shifter conflicts more than other beings. I need to see if everyone is okay.”

“I get it. Go on. You need to make sure your family is safe.”

Zoe rolled her eyes, her smile returning. “I’m not gonna leave you high and dry. I’ll be back soon. I want a front row seat to you kicking Jayson Fell in the balls. Plus, I want to help you guys get that bastard Simon. I’m sure you and loverboy have a bunch of plans, and I’m all in.”

“Well, you aren’t going alone.”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

It was my turn to roll my eyes. “There’s a war going on. Cullman is a pretty long way from here, well outside my pack lands. I don’t want you out there with no one to watch your back.”

“Who the hell do you have in mind? Are you coming with? A girl’s trip?”

Looking over her shoulder, I noticed the Haveners. Most of them were shell-shocked from being back in the real world after all that time on Bloodstone. Among them, a broad-shouldered alpha was handing out bottles of water. I grinned at Mika and waved him over.

He probably hadn’t heard yet that his father had died in the riots. Once he did, he’d have some sort of grieving to do. His dad had been a piece of shit, and maybe Mika would mourn for the man his father could have been, or something. Either way, having Zoe around would help. As goofy and talkative as she was, I wouldn’t want anyone else to help me deal with something heavy like that. Plus, her family wassuper-accepting of everyone and would welcome him with open arms.

That was something I thought Mika might need as well—acceptance. From what I’d learned, he’d never had that before.

“You really have become the little matchmaker, haven’t you,” Zoe whispered to me as Mika walked up.

“What’s up? Is everything okay?” Mika asked. He spoke to me, but he only had eyes for Zoe.

“Well,” Zoe said, trailing her fingers down his chest, “I have averydangerous mission for Agent McBroodypants. Are you up for it?”

“Depends on what it is,” Mika said with a grin.

“Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to keep me safe on a trip to check on my family. To make sure they’re safe.”

Mika’s grin widened. It was nice to see. He’d smiled so rarely on the island. He was handsome, and more than that, hewas a kind and gentle man. All the things his pack wasn’t, and everything Zoe deserved.

“I think I’m up for it,” he said.

“Good! I’m sure my parents and grandparents will want to meet the hottest alpha from the final season ofThe Reject Project.”

“Okay,” he said. For the first time since I first met him, he actually looked excited.

Zoe turned to give me one last hug. “See you soon, bestie.” She jabbed a threatening finger into my nose. “No getting into danger while I’m gone.”

“No promises,” I said, cracking a grin.

“Ugh, you shifters. A real pain in my ass.” Zoe raised an eyebrow at Mika. “Though, sometimes a pain in the ass can feel really good, if you know what I mean.”

Mika smiled, then frowned. “Wait, what?”

They vanished a moment later as Zoe teleported them away.

Behind me, angry shouts erupted. And it sounded like my dad. I spun to find him jabbing a finger toward Gavin.
