He plucked the girl’s wrist from the table and let it fall back down changing the subject. “Not really sure how we’re supposed to dispose of this one. I can’t exactly call Jimmy after what happened at the club. I’m sure he’s hiding undersome rock by now.”

“Yeah, I realize that.” I paced the floor, staring at my shoes, realizing my tie had been thrown to the opposite corner. “Where is Freya now?”

“She’s asleep on Tina.”

“Onher?” My brow rose.

Oliver rolled his eyes. “Man, you really do have it bad for her. Don’t you?”

When I didn’t answer, he elaborated. “I just mean, I’ve never seen you so jealous. They’re best friends, Dustin. She’s not a threat to you.”

“I guess,” I growled, trying to shake the anger from me. “Fuck- what is wrong with me? Sasha and Father just died, and I’m over here getting jealous over a lousy girl.” My fist slammed into the table. “It’s like she’s in myfuckinghead.”

“What do you think they’ve done with mother?” Oliver seemed saddened.

“That deathwalker mentioned our kind becoming weak. Do you think they kept Mother alive because she’s of pure lineage?” It was just a random thought expressed loudly, but as my own words sunk, it felt more than likely to be true. After all, it made the most sense. Perhaps that was why he had disregarded me? Maybe he had no intentions ofeverkilling me?

“Why would a deathwalker care about a succubus at all?” Oliver said, chin in hand, as he thought to himself. “I mean, there must be more than just the girl. More to what’s going on here.”

“There’s only one person that we both know that’s old enough to know anything about the deathwalkers. Edward might know something we’re missing.” I added as we bothprodded the dead body before us with our fingers.

“But first thing’s first. What do you want to do with this problem?” Oliver frowned.

“Help me bring her to the back where the exit sign is.” I nudged my head toward the glowing exit sign that lit up the little corner where we were.

Oliver nodded, grabbing the girl’s arms while I held her legs as we gently laid her outside the door. Her head laid propped against the cemented wall as a cruel smile slid across her face.

It was the one thing that left our mark on our victims and was traceable to our kind. Our killing card, if you will. Our victims’ faces would permanently be stained with that same horrid grin like they died happy. In a sense, they did, filled with the most intoxicating kind of ecstasy that drained them to the point of death.

As I looked at the dead girl before me, I knew I shouldn’t have cared. Every instinct in me was telling me that this was how it was meant to be, that I was a monster like every other demonic being. And yet, because of Freya, I actually felt remorse. A feeling that I was not kin with.

All I could think about were the things that this girl was never going to be able to experience. The life I stole from her. And it was infuriating. With this newfound conscience I had developed, how was I supposed to ever go back to how things were before Freya?

Hell, how was I even supposed to be able to kill again? Would this guilt continue to creep up on me? I still had a bargain with Jimmy – assuming life continued as usual. I had places to be. People to kill.

I turned to Oliver as we stood outside, briefly letting the cool air wash over us before we turned back to our insanenew life. " Did you know what Jimmy wanted in exchange for cleaning up my problems? He wanted me to kill two vampires on the north side of the city.” It was a random thought that I could have kept to myself, but it felt nice to say it out loud. To tell someone.

“Why? He can’t deal with a few messy vampires himself?” His brow hitched slightly.

“I guess they are messing with his business. I’m sure he’s scared of them, which is why he’s asking for me to do it.”

Oliver chuckled slightly. “He should be more scared ofyou.”

“Not after what he witnessed in the club back there. I doubt anyone will fear me anymore.” I hissed under my breath. Sasha’s eyes would continue to blame me as my mind stained the image of them. I could see them so clearly, even now. Glaring at me from the back of my thoughts. Blaming me for not being strong enough. For not saving her.

I could feel Oliver roll his eyes, even without words. Though, he made sure I heard him as he spoke. “You need to get over yourself. Do you know how many times I wished I could have your powers? How many times it would have been helpful? Just because it didn’t work one time doesn’t mean you’re worthless. You have no idea what I would give to have just a fraction of your abilities.”

“I don’t know how to kill him. What good am I if I can’t avenge our father? Our sister? If I can’t find a way to save mother?” For the first time, I felt tears building up in my eyes. I tried to wipe them away before Oliver could see.

“So then we try again and again until thatfuckeris in the ground.”

When we walked back inside- unveiling the curtain- my eyes sprinted to find Freya. I could see her blonde hair billowingout over a lounge chair. Spirals of her curls piled on the red plush pillows as her head hung over the side and her arm slung around Tina’s shoulder sloppily.

Tina’s green eyes met mine with disgust. “Was that Stella with you?” She said.

“Stell-“I stopped talking when I realized that I didn’t even know her name. “The blonde?”

She sighed. “I’d say yes, but I’m sure all blondes look identical to you.”
