“Let’s just go with, yes. It was Stella.” I rolled my eyes, knowing where this conversation might go. But I didn’t care what Tina thought of me. She wasn’t any better than me. Her moral compass was just as fucked as I was.

“Where is she?” She asked, eyeing the room behind us, waiting to see if her friend might come strolling out.

“I- well-” How could I put this lightly? “Just be thankful I didn’t fuck, Freya.”

“I see.” She barely choked out as she frantically brushed Freya’s hair in her hands.

Oliver inched forward, ironically phased by Tina. I wanted to lecture him back on catching feelings. It was apparent to me now that he had even grown a soft spot for one of them. The stripper, how veryclicheof him.

“We should go then. I’ll go get the car.” She said, looping Freya’s arm away from her as she stood up.

Even though she trusted me with Freya for this moment, I couldn’t imagine that would last after tonight. It was not like she was in any position to be judging me. I’d imagine she had killed a few in her past. After all - the first taste was always the messiest. I did not doubt in my mind she killed the poor boy - or girl - that got trapped in her net.

With Freya laying there peacefully, it was hard not to look at her. Her eyes were puffed slightly, a few tears still streaming down her cheek, and I hated that I had caused that. She had been through so much today. Too much. More than any human could ever imagine going through.

I let my arms sink into the chair until she lazily slumped into me. Her head snug into my neck as I pulled her into my chest, ready to carry her out the door. Even now, as she laid sound asleep, she was intoxicating.

She was almost lightweight, floating in my arms as her hair tangled in the small crease of my neck. The little drool that spilled from her mouth dripped onto my collarbone, and her mouth made an adorable cooing sound as if she was having some dream.

Oliver followed tightly behind us, unsure if the manager would notice that one of his girls was still missing, but the mayhem within the strip club was more than what we had created, so we were able to skip out without being seen.

As Tina’s car pulled up, Oliver sat in the front, as expected. I gently placed Freya into the back seat, her body slightly squirmed as she sunk into it. The silver tongue shots had knocked her out, or maybe the long day had.

As I climbed into the back, I watched as Tina eyed me very intently from the rearview mirror. “You can judge me all you want, but that doesn’t change the predicament we’re all in right now.” I finally said as the car engine revved a tad, forcefully flinging me forward.

“Stella is a friend of mine. Orwas, thanks to you.” She spat back, talking to me through the mirror.

“It might not have even been Stella. It could have been another blonde. You’re right, I do tend to get them mixedup from time to time.” I knew I shouldn’t have been acting cruelly, butgod, she was infuriating, trying to act all justified. How Freya had her as a friend was beyond me.

The car jerked forward once more, this time harder. Freya fell into the back of Tina’s seat at the shortfall. Tina’s air in her lungs gasped at the realization of what she had just done unintentionally.

“I’m sure you didn’tmeanfor that to happen. Just like I didn’t.” I pressed further, reaching down to grab Freya and pull her back into the seat. This time, I let her fall into my lap, cuddling into my chest and watched as she snuggled into me, almost in sync. I tried to hide what I felt, but as her warmth spread, it was hard not to feel my heart fasten. To feel excited by her little touch as her hand groggily slid across my chest.

“She’s a cuddler.” I mentally noted as she attempted to snuggle deeper into my chest as if that was possible.

“I’d love to tell you to hit the road and leave the two of us alone, but I know Freya too well. Even though you think you’ve messed up, she’ll wake up tomorrow rationalizing everything you did and find some excuse for you. The same way she rationalizes our friendship every time I fuck up and do something stupid.” Tina huffed, finally removing her eyes from me to look at the dark road ahead. However, I doubt that would help her horrific driving skills.

“If there is one thing I know, it’s that look she has when she cares about someone. It’s rare, and honestly, I don’t think you even remotely deserve that look. No matter how many times you saved her life today. But she has had a hard life, so don’t you dare make it any harder on her, not after everything today. I swear to whatever deity you believe in that if you ever do to her what you did to Stella. If you ever hurt her like that, I willmake it my life’s work to end yours.” She was bold to threaten a full-bred succubus.

I respected it, to be honest. She would die for her friend, just as I would die for my family. And as I looked down at Freya breathing on my chest, I could see how someone so insignificant could suddenly be so much more.

She was most definitely that.

More.

Was that why the deathwalkers wanted her? Why the ancients wanted her?

Hopefully, seeing Edward would help clarify what they wanted and why. Maybe I could even figure out why I was suddenly so obsessed with this girl. Why I could feel her thoughts and emotions like we were tied to each other.

Chapter 16

Freya

When I woke up, I was alone in Tina’s car.

The sun had blinded me as it bleached through the tinted windows and illuminated the empty seats beside me. For a moment, I had almost considered that I was in a dream. I was looking out, watching the car sit in an empty parking garage with no one in sight.

It felt very dreamy, in the sense of a nightmare.
