“I don’t think you got enough,” he jokes and I laugh, dropping into the chair across from him.

“I don’t know about that. The new girl in town seems to like my face just fine.”

“What new girl?” he asks. I’m not surprised.

Ryker has to be the only shifter I know who isn’t interested in finding his fated mate. He barely pays attention to women, or people in general, so I’m not too shocked that he doesn’t know who I’m talking about.

“The curvy redhead. She just moved here like a week or so ago.”

“Huh,” he says.

I can see him half-heartedly trying to remember her, but he can't.

“I just ran into her,” I tell him for some reason.

Ryker lifts an eyebrow at me, and I know he’s wondering why I’m talking about this girl. Honestly, I’m kind of wondering the same thing. I don’t think she’s my mate. I mean, she smelledgood, but her scent was faint. I always thought when I found my fated mate, I would instantly know.Maybe the wind was blowing in the wrong direction?Hopeful thinking on my part. Still, I haven’t been able to get her out of my head since she walked into me.

An image of her clear, light green irises flashes behind my eyes and my wolf stills his pacing inside of me.

Interesting…

“Are you ready to go over the budget?” Ryker asks with a sigh.

He rubs his forehead and I can tell that he already has a headache. The previous Alpha had been skimming money from the pack and it’s been a huge hassle to try to clear up the books and get everything back on track.

“Yeah, let’s do it,” I grumble, about as excited for this task as he is.

He passes me a book and I try to focus as I get to work.

"I ran into Logan," Ryker informs me a few moments later. "He was complaining about their gear at the firehouse being outdated. We should try to find money for that. Plus, if we're going to try to increase tourism, we need to stock up the EMTs and Twisted Oak Hospital with supplies."

“Okay, how much do you think that will be?” I ask him.

“They sent over the estimates. Let me find them.”

He digs through a stack of papers and I stand and head over to the coffee pot to pour myself a cup. The stuff is awful and I wince as I swallow. Ryker has never been much of a cook, but even if it’s just pushing a button on a coffee maker, he somehow manages to mess that up, too.

“Maybe we should call Cliff or Rule,” I suggest. Ryker nods.

“They’re in Colorado, right?”

“Yeah, last I heard anyway. They were setting up a pack there, or taking over one. They might have some tips for us.”

We served with Cliff, Burke, Wells, and Rule in the military. They all got out after Burke was hurt and moved to a small town in Colorado. They met their mates a year or so ago and we’ve lost contact a bit, but I’m sure that they would be happy to help us or give us some ideas on making Twisted Oaks profitable again.

“I’ll call them after lunch,” Ryker says and I nod.

“Should I call in our order now?”

“No, let’s wait a bit.”

I take my seat and we work in silence for an hour, both trying to make sense of the tangled ledgers. The problem is that there’s a fake ledger and a real one, but the previous Alpha seems to have mixed them up half of the time so you can never tell what is real and what’s not.

I pause long enough to call in our lunch order and then lean back in my seat.

“This is ridiculous,” Ryker seethes and I nod.

“I know.”
