“I’ve seen front companies with better numbers than this.”

I nod again and he scrubs his hands down his face.

“Why did we think that it was a good idea to come here?” he asks me and I smile slightly.

“We wanted to help people,” I remind him. My friend sighs, staring up at the ceiling.

“It doesn’t feel like we’re doing that right now,” he mutters.

"We are. No one else was going to step forward to right this sinking ship. People in town would have lost everything. I know it sucks to be the messenger of such bad news, but they know we're helping them. They trust us to fix things."

He nods and a knock sounds at the door. It’s our food and I hurry to grab it. Maybe after we eat something, we’ll be able to figure a way out of this mess.

We eat in silence and my wolf paws at me. He wants to go out for a run, but I can’t leave Ryker alone to deal with all of this.

Tonight,I promise him.

Ryker leaves to call the guys and I clean up our trash and drag the books closer to me. I lose track of time as I try to chase down money from one account. By the time I look up, I can barely see straight and I realize that it’s long since grown dark.

“I’ve got to get out of here,” Ryker mutters as we gather up our work and lock it away in the safe.

“We’ll tackle more tomorrow,” I say, clapping him on the back.

The guys in Colorado actually had some good ideas. They suggested hiring a forensic accountant to deal with the books, but the Pack doesn't have the money for that.

“I’ll see you in the morning,” Ryker says as we both head outside.

“See you.”

The temperature has dropped and my wolf paws at me in excitement. I start to head home, intending on going inside to shift and then running back to the forest that borders my house.

I spot a familiar head of red hair up ahead and I smile when I see my hat covering half of the fiery locks. She glances over her shoulder and my stomach cramps when I see a flash of fear in her eyes.

I sweep the perimeter, trying to figure out what’s spooked her, but the streets are empty. I frown as I watch her pick up her pace. She looks back again, her big green eyes scanning the streets.

I take a deep breath, smelling her fear. My wolf whines and I decide to ask her if she needs any help. Then the wind shifts and it hits me. I know. I fucking know.

Mate.

My wolf howls in my head and I stare at the girl in shock.

She’s my mate.

I just found my mate.

Holy shit.

A wide grin stretches my lips and I jog to catch up with her. I can’t fucking believe my luck. Why didn’t I recognize her as my mate before? My wolf is screaming at me to bite her and claim her, and I intend to do that as soon as possible.

As I close the distance between us, I reach out for my mate’s arm, hoping she’ll turn and recognize me, too. Instead, I scare the ever-living shit out of her.

CHAPTER THREE

PHOENIX

As soon as I feel the hand clamp down around my elbow, I scream.

“No,” I shriek, terror flooding my lungs and making it hard to breathe.
