Friday night comes around quickly, and I’m glad for that too. I’ve been working on all the major social media websites, ensuring I respond to messages and uploading images from the Writer’s Festival. You know, always need to give my followers a peek inside my world.

But now, I’m in a mad rush, walking in my favorite hot pink strappy heels, praying I won’t trip over as I hurry past the foot traffic. Just as I wasabout to leave the apartment, I got a sense of cold feet about my outfit and quickly changed.

After a debate on what Tiffany considers professional, I dressed up in a grey high-waisted skirt, and a tucked in yellow blouse. I feel boring but at least the pink shade of my shoes makes me pop.

Running my fingers through my hair, which I decided to have down today, I finally get to the café.

Tiffany messaged me earlier and said to meet her at our favorite booth down the back, where we find there are always fewer people, giving us more privacy. I easily notice her long brown hair in a bun that has her favorite flower pin in it, adding some color. She notices me and grins, then waves me over. I adjust my skirt and find my way over to the booth, wondering why in the world she wants me here and—.

What the hell?

My eyes widen as I blurt out, “Jaxon? What are you doing here?”

His surprise matches mine, and he looks over to Tiffany, as if waiting for her to jump in. “I, uh, I’m here to meet a—wait, what are you doing here?”

I look over at my sister, who is sitting there with a shit-eating grin.

“Tiff…” I say in a growl. “What the hell are you up to?”

“How do you know each other?” Jaxon asks with a raised eyebrow.

I cross my arms and nod to Tiffany. “She’s my sister.” I also want to add for him not to get into his playboy mood because she is off limits. Although that’s a big insinuation and I don’t want to rock the boat any more than it has been.

Jaxon’s head swivels to Tiffany, and before he can say anything, my mischievous sister grabs her purse and stands up.

“You seem like you both know each other. I’ll give you some time to catch up. Nice to meet you, Mr. Sunters,” and then walk out. Not to mention giving me a dazzling wink and a kiss on the cheek before saying, “Have fun, kids!”

We both gawp at her as she walks out of the café, acting as if she did not just set us up.

Gosh, I hate her sometimes.

Chapter Thirty-One

JAXON

I’m surprised at the turn of events. Though my annoyance at being played by Tiffany soon gives way to some hope. Or excitement? Either way, I’m feeling something positive.

Maybe now I can clear things up.

I clear my throat, preparing to talk, but don’t get anywhere because Abigail beats me to it.

“How’ve you been?” Her tone is light but guarded.

“I’ve been better. You?” I don’t disguise my wariness as I answer her question. It’s true, but I don’t want her to laugh at my sense of failure andembarrassment.

Abigail sighs, taking Tiffany’s spot opposite me. “I’ve been alright. Writing again, so that’s good.” Her eyes aren’t focused entirely on mine, especially when she mentioned writing, reminding me of how it was part of the demise of our insta-romance. Or fling. Or whatever the hell it was. But it was something.

“That’s good.”

“So, are you enjoying being back home? I’m sure you’ve flung yourself back to normalcy,” says Abigail. Although she mocks me, I’m still floundering at how I have a non-existent sex life since I returned to Chicago.

“As I said, I’ve been better. And I haven’t been sleeping around, if that’s what you mean. It is possible for me to go a week without having sex.”

It was supposed to sound like a joke in my head, but by looking at Abigail’s expression, I have a feeling it didn’t go that way.

Her lips thin, and I wait for her rebuttal.

“I read a little of your book. It sure seems that way.”
