Gabe stood with me, coming around the desk to show me out. “You’re very welcome, Ella. I kind of had that impression when we met, and like I said, I just had a good feeling about you.”

Outside, the sun was high in the sky, and a slight breeze was in the air. My wolf lifted her nose, content with the feeling of the wind in my hair. If I hadn’t taken her for a run the day before, she would have been begging to shift. As it was, she circled a few times and promptly fell asleep.

Despite sleeping well after Gabe, I was eager to join her. Maybe I would finally get some rest without having any crazy nightmares.

I went back to Gabe’s, ensuring that the door was locked behind me. I changed and slipped beneath the sheets. It took me no time at all to settle on the comfortable mattress and fall asleep.

At first, it seemed like I would get my wish, but soon my mind was taken over with deep male voices. Their words were fuzzy and unintelligible, almost like I was hearing them underwater. Slowly, they started to get clearer.

“I don’t care where you’ve looked. You aren’t searching hard enough.” The shiver that I felt run down my spine toldme immediately that the voice belonged to my mate.

The wolves he spoke to must be fools. They should be terrified, but all they did was laugh and shake their heads. One, the largest in the group, answered him.

“The guys are doing the best they can, Trace. We’ve got every tracker there is searching nearby packs and roadside hotels. I’ve got to hand it to your girl; she’s a sly one.” The man leaned over a pool table, angling his stick to take a shot. I felt my mate’s frustration at the way he was being dismissed.

“You know,” another wolf added. “You’d probably get farther with her if you tried to charm her a little more, and huffed and puffed a little less. She might not be running out of rebellion. She might just be scared of you. Have you thought of that?”

Trace grumbled a response, and the feeling of his disbelief was strong. She knows I’d never hurt her. She’s my true mate. I want to cherish her, worship her…discipline her…

Explicit images of us flashed through his mind, causing him to become horny and me to panic. I clawed at the darkness to try and wake myself up. My stirring drew his attention, and I felt his confusion replace his arousal.Little wolf, is that you?

I refused to answer and tried to calm myself. How was I able to hear him? Or see through his eyes? He hadn’t bitten me. We hadn’t even kissed, much less had sex. Those things were required for a clear and strong bond. And yet, the goddess was nonetheless allowing me access to his mind and emotions.

Even worse, this connection wasn’t one-way. He could sense my emotions, too. I felt his excitement and joy burstthrough my body. I felt his wave of positive emotions ebb and flow, incorporating others like disappointment and confusion over me running away. And there, just beneath the surface, was the deeply rooted jealousy that he harbored against any man I had contact with. He moved for the door without offering any explanation to the others in the room.

I heard them voice concern and ask where he was going, but I knew. He wanted to be alone to focus on us. I could see a hallway and a beautifully decorated office before he finally stopped in an ornate bedroom. He locked the door behind him and settled onto the bed.

Mariam, please talk to me.

His voice rolled over me, calming the anxiety I felt initially about the connection. I formed the words in my mind, testing his ability to hear me.What do you want with me, grey wolf?

I felt his wolf join in his joy, yipping and acting like a puppy, happy to be acknowledged. My wolf came forward, eager to see him, too.

Our wolves know each other, mate. We are fated. Written in the stars. That’s the only way this discussion is possible.

The way he talked tempted me to listen to what he was saying. His voice was almost hypnotic. Refusing to be swayed, I forced myself to remain grounded in reality.

Even if that’s true, I do not want to be mated. I want my freedom.

Trace growled low.I spoke to your former alpha. He informed me of the type of freedom you have been enjoying.

It’s not just about sex, I countered.I want to be able to do what I want and have the friends I want, too. Being mated to a male werewolf would be suffocating, and I have a feeling you would beworse than most.

He grunted, not denying his controlling nature. This is the way of our kind, little wolf. You’ll see. I love rewarding obedience.

Again, images of us together assaulted my mind. I wanted to look away, but there was nowhere to avert my gaze. I drank in the scene of him pounding into me, hand wrapped around my hair to keep me securely in place. In his vision, I screamed and begged him for more.

Two could play that game. I concentrated on an image of my own, showing him my night with Alexander. The large man had lowered his head to feast on my core. My legs were hoisted high over his shoulders as he brought me to orgasm again and again.

The fury radiating off Trace startled me out of the dream and propelled me back into consciousness.

Chapter 7

Trace threw the closest thing to him -an alarm clock, shattering it and leaving an indent in the drywall. Any misgivings he had about killing his mate’s lover were gone. In fact, he was disappointed that he had been so merciful about the idiot’s death. Trace had snapped the shifter’s neck as soon as he caught Mariam’s scent in the hotel room, just as his wolf demanded. He should have made him suffer and beg for forgiveness before ending his life.

The rational side of Trace’s brain told him that he should also be angry with Mariam. She broke the laws of celibacy. She should have been waiting forhim. Forthem.

“Are you alright, Trace?” His beta Randy’s voice was faint on the other side of the thick door. He raked his hands through his hair as he got up and unlocked it for the beta. They were like brothers, and Trace could use his support now more than ever.
