“Yes. I’ll look into garage space in the meantime,” she replied.

By the time they got to Lisa’s, everyone, including Zach Durand, had arrived.

Lisa warned him, “Just so you know, my ex is coming with his new girlfriend.”

“The nurse?”

“No. This is the woman who gave him a blowjob the first time they saw each other at the Poconos last year.”

“Jesus, you didn’t tell me about that,” he said, grimacing.

“Yes. I’m trying to space out the really grotesque stuff.”

“How are you allowing her into your home after that?”

“She came here the next week with another guy. Dan, as a matter of fact,” she said, pointing to Dan, “and the truth came out at that time.”

“Wow, she’s got a lot of nerve coming around here now.”

“It’s fine. She’s a bigwig at the Bank of China. A forensic accountant or something like that. Thankfully, you’re here.”

“I just got that. Is he going to try to beat me up?”

“Ha! Ryan’s a pacifist. You’re also a foot taller and fifty pounds heavier than he is.”

“Oh, great.” Zach ran his hands through his hair. “How do I look?”

“Like a movie star.”

Lisa lifted a ten-pound container of sandwiches onto the counter.

“I’ll help you,” he said, snickering. He grabbed a towel and wrapped it around his waist.

“Place these sandwiches on that tray. It’s not too cold to eat outside, is it?”

“It was sixty degrees outside when I got here. It’s supposed to go up to seventy today. They’re running around outside, so they’ll be warm.”

“Can I take anything out for you?” Kassandra asked, coming into the kitchen.

“Yes! Thank you. This tray of cookies. Sandra just took out a carafe of hot chocolate and one of coffee.”

Adults streamed in to take food out to the terrace as Lisa and Zach arranged potluck items that had been brought in.

“There’s plenty out there,” Sandra said, rubbing her hands together. “I’m going to go to the playroom and see what that group is up to.”

“Okay, they can eat in there,” Lisa said. “Just ask Daniela to set up their little folding table.”

“It’s so quiet in here,” Zach said.

“Do you want to go outside and join in the game?”

“I will when you’re done with the food. I want to help.”

Lisa turned at the sound of the side gate opening. “It’s Ryan and Jolene.”

Zach removed the towel he’d used as an apron and folded it, watching Lisa go to the door.

“Hi, Ryan, Jolene.”
