“Um, maybe we’d better talk first,” she said, grimacing at Laura.

On the terrace, Lisa stood with her back against the cottage, chatting with Kassandra.

“So, there’s my ex with his new girlfriend already. What do you think?”

“I’m sure Tony’s with Janine. Andy’s been a little too solicitous, in my opinion. I bet if I ask him, he lies.”

“Who are you talking about?” Sandra asked, joining the huddle.

“Did Andy talk to Tony this morning?” Kassandra asked.

“I think so. I don’t think it was good.”

“See, I told you! He was probably with Janine,” Kassandra said, smirking.

“He didn’t say specifically, but when I asked him if everything was okay, he said, ‘My brother is a jackass.’”

“It’s the lies I can’t stand,” Kassandra cried. “Not even the booty call. I get it! I worked eighty to one hundred hours a week. He was lonely.”

Pam joined the women. “That’s no excuse,” she said, obviously ticked off. “They need saltpeter if they can’t go an evening without sex.”

“What’s saltpeter?” Lisa asked.

“Oh my God, you’re kidding, right?” Pam asked while the others roared.

Kassandra laughed. “It is in reference to potassium nitrate, but it does not have any influence on carnal impulses. The story that it was put into soldiers’ food to decrease their sex drive is a myth.”

“I never heard of that,” Lisa said. “It wouldn’t affect Ryan anyway. His is all psychological.”

“Most sex is,” Sandra said. “Anyway, have you talked to Tony?” she asked Kassandra.

“No. I’m having a pleasant time today. Do I really need him hanging around? I’m not even sure why we're together. How can you love someone who lies on such a deep level?”

“I want you in my family,” Sandra said. “I’m so angry at him.”

“I’ll still be in your family because I’ll have your niece or nephew.”

“That’s true.”

“I don’t think I can marry him now, even if we get back together. There’s too much at stake.”

“So, you would consider getting back together with him, just not marriage.”

“I’m not sure yet. If he’s with Janine now, all bets are off!”

“There’s Andy. Ask him,” Lisa said.

“I will.”

Kassandra left the group and ran over to where Andy stood, talking to Max and Alison.

“Can I talk to you?” Kassandra asked, glancing at Max. Studying his face for a moment, she was sure he was wearing eye makeup. “Hi, Max.”

“Hi, Kassandra. We’ll leave you two,” he said.

“Sure,” Andy said. “I bet you’re going to put me on the spot regarding my brother.”

“I am. I’m sorry. I just need to know if he’s with Janine.”
