The nannies left, babbling excitedly.

“So, how do I repay you?” Lisa asked the men.

“You’ve watched our kids pretty much nonstop since we moved here. I think that’s plenty,” Andy said.

“Me, too,” Max said. “I’d better get home. Six a.m. comes fast.”

The men got their coats off the rack and bundled up for the short walk home. Max stopped Andy before he crossed the street.

“I feel like I need to talk to you more about this,” Max said, pointing to his eyes again.

“I’m here for you, Max. We were interrupted upstairs. Do you think you want to do this full time?”

Max looked at the ground.

“It’s more than cross-dressing,” Andy stated. “I can feel it.”

“It’s more than that,” Max admitted.

“And Alison knows?”

“Alison is one hundred percent on board.”

“Would you have surgery?” Andy asked, trying not to grimace.

“No. I like my life with Alison in that regard.”

“Gotcha. Boy, life is so complicated,” Andy said. “I wish it wasn’t. You should be able to live any way you want.”

“We’ll see. I don’t see Pam and Dan throwing me a coming out party.”

“Don’t worry about those two,” Andy said, snickering.

They parted ways, Andy heading a few cottages down and Max crossing the street. Alison waited for him at the door.

“How’d it turn out?”

“You should run over and look,” Max said, taking off his coat. “I left home without washing my face, and Andy asked about the eyeliner.”

“Ugh.” Alison placed her hand on his back and steered him further into the house. “It might be time to share our news formally.”

“I wish I could just morph into it and not make a big production about it.”

“I don’t think you’ll have to. The boys across the street already accept it.”

“They do? I guess the girls must have said something. Truthfully, I’m worried about Ryan.”

“What about him?” Alison asked. “He should be the last concern.”

“I’m worried he’ll use it against me about being a good dad. I want to adopt his kid.”

“Max, I’ve documented everything hehasn’tdone, and the man isn’t interested in parenting Morgan. Adam is on board with giving up his parental rights to his two girls, and I think Ryan will, too. The only humans you need to impress are my daughters.”

Max had already made inroads with the girls when they asked him to be their makeup model. He sat for hours while Megan, Diana, and Miranda experimented on doingAunt Max’smakeup. It was the usual weekend routine to do Max’s makeup, and he would wear it all day unless they were going out.

“Ah, don’t wash it off!” Diana would cry. “You look awesome.”

Lisa shut the door, watching Andy and Max hover outside the gate. Sadness washed over her. They were going home to theirfamilies after serving her household. Where was Ryan? At home with Jolene, while other men finished the job he’d started.
