“I’m sorry I haven’t reached out, Lisa. Now I feel guilty.”

“We’re both guilty of different things,” Lisa said. “I didn’t call to make you feel bad, but if you can see your son, then it will be worth it. Right now, I don’t feel capable of much. I’ll take all the help I can get.”

They made small talk for a little longer before Lisa hung up. It was definitely time for everyone who had depended on her help to step up. Dan would be the first one she’d approach. He’d gotten away with so much, doing the minimum for his sons. She wasn’t going to let him get away with it much longer.

And Alison and Sandra would have to either allow Lisa’s children to spend more time with them or keep their own kids at home. Lisa always had several extra kids in tow, and it was time to change that narrative.

She first called Sandra.

“Um, Laura told me what was happening,” Sandra said.

“Yes. It’s over with. Daniela took the kids to the park, so I’m here alone. It’s going to take me a while to get used to this.”

“I’m so sorry, Lisa.”

“Yes, thanks. I saw Kassandra this morning.”

“We saw them earlier. It’s going to be different, for sure. I feel bad about Igor, but he had too many expectations.”

“I feel bad about him, too. He seemed like the perfect match for my mother.”

“Actually, Dan is perfect for her. I’m happy they are finally together.”

“That will take some getting used to,” Lisa confessed. “Anyway, I just wanted to touch base now that Ryan is gone. I’m feeling needy.”

“Send the boys down! Brent will love it, and I owe you.”

“I will, as soon as Daniela returns. Thank you, Sandra.”

“Talk later.”

She ended that call. Next was Alison, but Lisa was too exhausted to talk to her. Alison was Ryan’s half-sister, too. For all Lisa knew, they had already spoken about his plans to leave. Her ego couldn’t take a conversation with Alison, who had also slept with Ryan. All the women on Sea View had.

All except her mother.

Grimacing, Lisa finished the coffee and returned to the kitchen. She didn’t have hobbies, didn’t like to cook, and had spent most of her recent adult life talking to Ryan. A newfound need to pray, to connect with something on a spiritual level, helped during times like this. In her bedroom, she got on her knees at the side of the bed.

“I need help to get through this with grace. Please help me do the right thing. What should I do next?”

Overwhelming tiredness washed over her like an answer to the prayer. Crawling up onto the bed, she giggled, closed her eyes, and fell right to sleep.

Chapter 2

Earlier that day, Kassandra had pulled into the driveway on Sea View two minutes after Igor had parked. He waited at his car with a huge grin on his face, waving at his son.

“This is perfect,” he called out when they got out of the car.

“She didn’t buy it yet, Dad,” Tony said, frowning.

“I know, I know, but if you do, it will make things so easy for all of us.”

Kassandra walked to the front door, decision made, her smile ear to ear. “I’m going to buy it. This is the perfect family home for us. On the water, lots of bedrooms, close to Andy and Sandra. Perfect.”

“I had papers drawn up already, just in case. You can take them to your attorney next week, and we can settle at that time.”

“Dad, you’re kind of rushing things,” Tony said.

“It’s fine,” Kassandra whispered. “I’m ready. I even have a deposit.”
