“I want to read through that will now,” he said. “If Dan said not to change it but the will has a current date, maybe my dad changed it anyway.”

“Do we have to waste the day reading a will? I’m ready to explore Babylon.”

Tony looked at it, the will feeling alive and significant in his hands. “I think my father knows we’re going to find it. He wants me to read it. That scares the shit out of me.”

“Why?”

“You know how Igor is, Kassandra. He only cares about the MD after his name and the money he makes. I’ve known this about my father since I was a tot. I don’t even know if he loved my mother. Cold Ass Iggie is the nickname we gave him. I wonder if that’s why his lady friend down here gave him the boot.”

Taking a deep breath, Kassandra said,[SH1]“I already bought the house, Tony. I don’t think Igor is going to write you out of the will because of it, and if he does, tough shit. I have enough money for us and our kids. I didn’t work my butt off for the last ten years and save every dime I made, living off you, just for the hell of it.”

“I didn’t say you lived off me.”

“You never took a dime from me,” she said, her chin in the air.

He grabbed her around the waist and kissed her. “I wanted to be your sole provider, baby.” He sang the Michael Bolton song “Soul Provider” to her, a little off-key but actually pretty well.

“I’ve needed nothing but you, Tony. Let’s go explore Babylon. I want to eat unhealthy foods, drink coffee and wine, and sit on the beach in the cold and let the sand do a number on my skin.”

Roaring with laughter, Tony nodded. “Got it. A little free dermabrasion, is that what you’re after?”

“Yes! I can’t wait to live here this summer and be pregnant out to here.” She held her arms out in front of her.

“I can’t wait, either,” Tony said, getting excited. “You know, we’ll have the nicest house on the beach.”

“You’re funny, Tony. I don’t care about that. I just wanted something big enough for us. And there’s nothing else for sale, anyway.”

They left the house. Tony drove this time, making a left out of the driveway. “We’ll go by Andy’s house first. Not to drop in. Just to observe.”

Andy, Alison’s boyfriend Max, Dan, and the curly haired pathologist, Will, were congregating in front of Lisa’s house.

“Look, my brother with his menfolk.”

Snorting, Kassandra said, “I have them all pegged. Only the one who looks homeless is missing.”

Tony rolled down his window. “What’s this? A Neighborhood Watch meeting?”

They gathered at the window, welcoming Tony to the neighborhood. “And Kassandra, too,” Andy said.

“She’s the one buying the place,” Tony explained, not worrying about spilling too much information.

“Did you really buy it?” Dan asked.

“I really did. Signed the papers yesterday and gave him a deposit. We’ll do the final thing tomorrow.”

“That’s great!” Dan said. “A great addition to the hood. Finally, a house that’s big enough for our parties.”

“Pam’s is big enough,” Will said, laughing.

“Yeah, but now that I’m living there, I don’t want to be inconvenienced.”

They laughed good-naturedly.

“Well, it was nice seeing you. We’re going to explore the new town. Talk to you all later!” Tony drove off, having the last word.

“That was nice,” Kassandra said. “I like them.”

“I still don’t see us fitting in down here.”
