“Okay, fair enough.”

“I think that covers it, then. Do you want me to go over my scheduled cases with the others?”

“Bethany can do that.” Bethany was Kassandra’s office manager.

“You prefer hearing from an office worker why I’ve scheduled the cases I have? That seems questionable, Louis. What’s your hurry to get rid of me?”

“It’s bad for morale to have someone of your stature leaving, that’s all.”

“My stature? I’m an associate.”

“You know you’re a favorite. It’s caused dissention among the medical staff.”

“Ah! So, it’s fortunate that I’m leaving when I am, rather than you searching for a reason to fire me. Wow, I have to be honest. I didn’t see that coming.” Then she thought of Igor. “How much does Roman have to do with this?”

The flush in Louis’s face answered the question.

“Be sure and get that document to me ASAP, Louis. I’ll share the recording with my attorney in the meantime.”

“Kassandra, we really want this to end amicably.”

She nodded and left the office, her shock from the conversation making her legs wobble.

“Dr. Coeur, I’m so sorry,” the secretary said.

“Thank you for the heads up,” Kassandra said, holding up her phone. “I recorded it.”

“Good for you. Will I see you again?”

“Probably not, but thank you.”

Kassandra left the office. Out in the hallway, she sent Tony a quick text.

On my way home. I’m free by the end of the week.

The drive back to the condo felt freeing. Planning for the next day would be easy; she would visit her patients that were in the hospital. The idea that Louis or one of the others would contact her office manager behind her back sent chills up her arms. She’d call Bethany as soon as she got home and tell her what was happening.

The SUV with the trailer attached was parked in the driveway. Smiling, Kassandra decided to keep a hands-off approach to whatever Tony wanted to take down to the new house. The garage was enormous, so anything they didn’t need could stay outside until it could be given away.

Tony met her on the porch. “I went a little nutty today.”

“You did great! I showered at the hospital after my cases, so let me get out of these clothes, and we can go.”

“Do I want to hear what happened?”

“I’ll tell you on the drive. I have a recording, which I’ll play. And I have to send it to David.”

“Ah! Getting the lawyers involved.”

“Yes. They are up to something, and I’m afraid Iggie is behind it. When I asked Louis, he turned bright red.”

“I figured as much. My father wants nothing to interfere with the money they have to pay him until he dies. With you out of the picture, they are still busy but only have to divide it five ways instead of six. However, they’ll lose all your revenue. Why didn’t they beg you to stay otherwise?”

“It’s almost over,” she replied.

A half hour later, they were on their way, pulling the trailer.

“Tomorrow I’ll have to go up to see my patients who haven’t been discharged yet. I insisted on seeing patients who are still under my treatment post-op. He didn’t like that, but too bad. I’ll have David draw up my demands and send them to Louis in the morning. I can’t wait to see what you brought. I noticed all the artwork off the walls.”
