Instead of rushing out, she sent Tony a text.Louis wants to see me. I’ll text when I’m leaving.

The Cardiology Group had an office complex attached to the hospital. She strolled through the halls in her pristine white lab coat and high heels, smiling as familiar faces greeted her. Once her notice was up, she wouldn’t miss anything about the place.

Louis’s secretary let her into the office. “Boy, are we going to miss you.”

“You are? I have the feeling everyone’s pissed off at me.”

“They’re probably jealous. He’s waiting for you,” she said, pointing over her shoulder. “Trust me, you have the upper hand.”

“Now I’m worried,” Kassandra replied, snickering. But she went forward and opened the door to Louis’s office.

“There she is,” he said, standing up behind his desk. “How’d your day go?”

“Good. Busy. I had two patients added on that Flynn couldn’t see.”

“Yes, I’m sorry about that. I know that’s one reason you’re leaving.”

“Louis, no it’s not. It’s the reason it’s easier for me to leave, true. But I want to get a life. I can’t start a family working eighty to one hundred hours a week. I’m just completely over it.”

“We are so sorry to see you go. But I get it. I’ve consulted the group attorney. He suggested you are free to go after you discharge your current patients.”

He hadn’t asked her to sit, so this conversation took place with them standing on either side of his desk. Immediately, Kassandra’s radar focused. If they were being so accommodating, there must be a reason.

“I’m going to record the rest of our conversation, with your approval,” she said.

He hesitated for a second. “Okay, that’s fine.”

“Why would your attorney suggest I go after I discharge my current patients?” she asked point blank after starting her recording app, wanting to get that tidbit into the recording.

“In his opinion, a clean break would bring peace of mind to both of us, fulfill our obligations, and bring about an amicable conclusion to the arrangement.”

“Put that in writing, Louis, so my attorney can check it out.”

“Okay, we can do that. I was hoping to resolve this by the end of the week.”

She wanted to ask what the hurry was but decided he was offering her a gift.

“I have surgeries scheduled for the next three weeks.”

“Flynn, Irving, and I can cover those, if you agree.”

“What if my patients don’t agree?”

“We’ll explain that you’re leaving the practice.”

“And my income won’t be affected?”

“Well, you won’t be paid for work you haven’t done.”

“I’d like to request an audit for the past six months, then,” Kassandra said, poker face in place. “In the meantime, if you can get a release for me to sign, I’ll relinquish my cases. What about office hours this week?”

“We’ll cover them.”

“To clarify, I will follow my current surgical patients, and you and the others will cover any upcoming new patients and surgeries in the queue. You’ve stated this includes seeing my post-op patients in the office that have appointments beyond Friday.”

“Correct.”

“I’m not comfortable with that. I’ll see my patients until they are discharged from the practice.”
