“I’m so boring,” he said. “What you see is what you get.”

“I see a handsome, generous, caring guy who has given his life for the well-being of strangers. That’s huge. It’s not boring at all.”

The next hour of coffee and talking gave Lisa what she needed to face the rest of the day as a single parent. Zach walked her out to her car.

“Can I see you again?” he asked.

“I’ll meet you next Wednesday for coffee.”

“I’d love to see you sooner, if it’s possible.”

“Aw, I’d like that a lot, but I’d better wait. It’s a little soon.”

“How long is long enough?”

“Well, six months seems like a reasonable time. We can have coffee, though. I really love coffee.”

His expression changed then, from hopeful to annoyed. “How about I give you my number, and when you feel like you’re ready, let me know.”

Lisa hesitated, unsure if he was being sarcastic. Maybe it was too soon to talk about dating. Ryan still had underwear in her bedroom.

“Okay, that’s a great idea.” She got out her phone, and Zach read off his number for her to key in. “Like I said, I really like you and have enjoyed this so much, but I might cause trouble for myself legally if I date too soon.”

“I got it,” he said, not getting it at all. “I’m disappointed.”

“I know,” she said. “But it’s not too early to be friends.”

“I’ve waited all this time,” he mumbled. “I guess six more months won’t be so long.”

They lingered at her car for a few more seconds. He wasn’t making any moves, so Lisa stood on her toes and kissed his cheek, like kissing a brother. “Thank you again, so much.”

She opened her door, and he held it for her while she got inside.

“You sure are beautiful,” Zach said.

“Hopefully, you’ll still think so in six months.”

“Six months is the new keyword,” he said. Finally loosening up, he barked out a laugh. “I’m sure I will if some other guy doesn’t come along and steal you away.”

“I promise you, no one else is getting in. The door is officially shut.”

“Aw, so you’re going to wait for me?” he asked.

“I am. You waited for me once a long time ago. Now it can be my turn.”

He bent down, and this time, he kissed her on the lips. A reflex, she pulled away.

“Oops, I guess you didn’t like that,” he muttered.

“It’s not that. It’s just fast, that’s all. And my coffee breath and all…” she said.

“We can still talk on the phone,” he said, straightening up.

“I’d like that,” she said. “The check-in call.”

Nodding, Zach closed her door and waited for the engine to start before he walked away. Watching him, Lisa was annoyed that she felt relief. The guy was already pressuring her. She would wait for the perfect moment to start a relationship with Zach or any other guy to avoid any complications. This time, she was going to do it right.

She was in town anyway, so Lisa decided to stop at the drugstore for a pregnancy test. She’d managed to push it out of her mind the last few weeks, but now that she was going to find out for sure, the reality of it hit her hard
