“Okay, we can do that,” Lisa said. “I need to eat better, too.”

They jogged along together, not talking. When they got to the causeway, they turned around and headed south again. They passed by Tony and Kassandra’s, Pam’s house, then Laura and Will’s, and finally came to Lisa’s cottage.

“Thank you, Megan. I needed that.”

“I did, too,” Megan said.” I feel better.”

“You do?” Lisa asked.

“I do. I had a tummy ache before. Now it’s gone.”

“Perfect! I feel better, too,” Lisa said.

“Did you have a tummy ache?” Megan asked.

“No, not really. I just feel better about everything,” she said, thinkingpsychic pain. “I love you, Megan. I’m sorry about everything.”

“What, Mom?”

“Oh, just the men who came and went, I guess,” Lisa said, embarrassed. “We never talked about it before, and you’re so gracious. You never made me feel like I was doing anything wrong.”

“Mom, I liked them. Maybe Tim was kind of a weasel…”

“Meg, who’d you hear that from?” Pam asked, laughing.

“Dan,” she answered, giggling. “But Tim didn’t really live with us.”

“No, thank heaven.”

“Steve was creepy.”

“Oh God, I forgot about Steve,” Lisa said, barking out a laugh. Her husband, gynecologist Steven Lafferty.

“I don’t remember my dad.”

“Aw, I’m sorry, honey. Ed was a great guy. He was tenderhearted. He’d have loved you so much. He was a priest before we met. Did you know that?”

“Like a priest priest?”

“Exactly. Your grandmother was so proud of him. And when he left the priesthood, I don’t think she ever recovered.”

“She’s Gladys, right? And she lives in Greece.”

“Correct. We should go to Greece and surprise her.”

“Can we?” Megan asked.

“Maybe. It’s something to think about. Maybe this summer. We could take everyone and make it a family vacation.”

“Oh. I thought it would just be you and me.”

“It’s something we can talk about, okay?” Pam asked. “I’m not sure what I would do with all the youngins. I’d have to farm them out. The little girls would be the biggest concern.”

“There are so many of them,” Megan said.

They approached their cottage and Lisa thought, you’re not kidding.
