“I didn’t want to disturb you.” He walked around the island to face her. “I know you know.”

“Lucky you,” she scoffed.

“I’m sorry. It was stupid, regrettable. Can you forgive me?” he begged.

“I hope so.” She closed her computer. “It’s probably good that it came out now, before we got married.”

“Why?” he asked.

“I’m not sure I can marry a cheater, Tony. There’s no excuse, so don’t even try to make one up.”

“I know that. Honestly, I’ve been trying to end it for a while. She knew something was up last year.”

“What gave you the courage?” Kassandra questioned.

“The baby. And that we might get married.”

“You haven’t been with her for a year?” Kassandra confirmed.

“At least,” he answered.

“When’s the last time you were with her?” she asked.

He thought about it for a while, and the last time he could remember having sex with Janine was when Kassandra had flown to Michigan the previous summer. But that was less than a year ago.

“I don’t remember exactly,” he replied weakly. “Maybe when you went to Michigan.”

“Great.”

“What can I do?” he asked.

“Probably move back to your condo, Tony. Give me time to recover. Prove to me you can live without Janine.”

“I still have to work with her, unfortunately.”

“Yes. Unfortunately. Right now, I feel sick. Any time we spend with Andy and Sandra will be a charade. I can’t feel loving toward you right now. I really want you out of my sight.”

“What will you do?” he asked.

“Move into my new house.” For the first time that morning, Kassandra smiled. “I have two hundred book boxes to unpack. That should keep me good and busy.”

“When can I come back?” he begged.

“We’ll play it by ear. If you see her again for sex, we’re through. Remember that.”

“She’s blocked on my phone.”

“When’s your next game?” she asked, glaring at him.

Tony got out his phone. “There was a soccer game this afternoon at Yankee Stadium, but it was postponed because of a water main break. Tomorrow, the Jets versus the Patriots at the Meadowlands.”

“You’ll see her tomorrow, then. That should be interesting.”

“Ugh.”

“You really didn’t think it through, did you?” she asked, snickering.

“No, I guess not. I never thought you’d fall in love with me or I’d never have let it go on for so long.”
