“Well, at least you’re being honest.”

She glared at him, and Tony saw the pain in her fragile beauty.

“I’ll leave, then.”

“Wait, Tony.”

Kassandra felt sick. What hurt the most? The sex part? It wasn’t even that. It was the lying.

“I wish we could go baby shopping today,” she said. “I can move beyond Janine to shop for our baby.”

“We can go, Kassie. I won’t forget how wrong I was just because you’re nice to me.”

“Let me think about it,” she said, looking at him.

It was one of those moments when you look at your mate and wonder who they are. They had played house for ten years. Now it was real. They were going to have a baby together. While Tony poured a cup of coffee, she tried to remember if there had been any signs that he was seeing another woman while she visited her dad. Sharing his life with her, his thoughts and ideas, getting comfortable enough with her to take off his clothes and show the whole package in daylight. Had he done that with Janine?

“You were as cool as a cucumber when I went to Michigan,” she said. “I never suspected for a second that you were cheating on me. That’s where I was at fault because I wasn’t in tune to you.”

“Who said that? It’s bullshit, blaming the injured party. It meant nothing to me, so I didn’t act differently,” he said. “I probably felt pressured to spend time with her, and one thing led to another.”

“Did you take her to the condo?” she asked.

“After you moved in, never. We never went to her place after Harry died. We didn’t mess around on the job, either.”

“There is a God.”

“I’m sorry, Kassandra. Do you still want me to leave?” he asked.

“I guess not. I’m a big pushover because of the baby. I don’t want to be a single parent, and I want more than one kid, so I guess you can stay. I might go to work with you tomorrow, though.”

“You are welcome to come! Everyone else brings their spouses and kids. You’ll have to see her, though.”

“Gladly,” she said, her nose in the air.

“Can I get you anything?” he asked.

“Yes. I’d like waffles and bacon, please.”

Grinning, Tony nodded. “Coming right up.”

Kassandra stared at her computer screen but didn’t see it. In the past, she’d loathed stories about women who would put up with a guy who cheated. Through Iggie, she’d heard about Pam and her late husband and the horrible secrets she’d discovered after he died. Surely Pam had to have known!

But maybe not, because Kassandra had never doubted Tony, and he’d had a secret life away from her all along. It was the lies.

“Did you and Janine have a fantasy about spending your life together?” she asked.

Frowning, Tony looked up from the waffle iron. “No. She was married, and by the time Harry died, you and I were together. I don’t think she ever pretended it would be anything more than it was,—just a way to kill time.”

“Instead of lying and using her, why didn’t you squeeze in another golf game?” she asked, chuckling.

“Force of habit, I guess. She was in place long before I met you. And once you were in my bed, I didn’t need anyone else. She was just available. I know that sounds awful.”

“It sounds terrible. Was she the only one?” she asked.

“Yes! Look, I’m so sorry. I’m lazy, okay?” Tony admitted. “I’ll regret it for the rest of my life. Nothing will be the same.”

“Not since I found out, it won’t be. I really had us up on a pedestal, Tony.”
