I knew she went to one of our gyms, but I’d never really paid attention to her physique. I had totally checked her out, but more in the general sense, before the way being in her presence made me feel had overshadowed the physical attraction I felt. Most of it, anyway.

My team listened to me explaining briefly what we’d been working on, and that we needed their opinions on the day’s work, then Kat moved her laptop around facing them.

Time flew past as all three of them rose to the occasion and gave us valuable feedback on the shop. It was only when Kat’s stomach rumbled that I realised how late it was. We were far from done and neither of us seemed prepared to call it a night just yet.

“Are you up for sushi from that place we ordered from the other day?” I looked at each of the four in turn, earning appreciative grins and nods back. “Same order as last time? Kat?”

“Sure.” She cocked an eyebrow, apparently impressed that I remembered.

“My treat.” Picking up my phone and ignoring the message from Abs demanding to know when the fuck I’d be home, I called The Bright Panda.

Half an hour later, a sweet snow leopard hybrid with the prettiest markings around his eyes dropped off bags of the finest sushi the town had to offer. I tipped him generously, then spread the boxes out on the table, poured drinks for each of us, and we tucked in.

I couldn’t remember the last time I had enjoyed an evening with friends, eating together, laughing, cracking jokes and working on something that made us all burn. I still felt passionate about APEX, but the mess that was the rest of my life had overshadowed it in the past five years. Feeling that familiar giddiness, the flame licking at my insides—it was everything to me. It helped that Kat was passionate about the project; her enthusiasm was infectious. She made me passionate about my company again.

I should have known it was too good to be true, but I didn’t care. Not when my team took their leave eventually, nor when Kat waited until I had turned off all the lights, checked all the doors and activated the alarm system.

I took her to her car, and on the spur of the moment, hugged her again. She didn’t hesitate or hold back, slinging her arms around my body. Her palms splayed warm over my shoulder blades and her face buried into the crook of my neck. I suppressed a sigh at the feel of her warm body against mine.

It was a fairly mild spring night, with a tiny waxing crescent moon high above us in the dark blue skies. Our hug went on for way too long. I knew it, but I dreaded the moment when I’d have to let go.

Eventually I had to back away, or I would have done things I would have regretted come morning.

“Thank you, Roy.”

She whispered the words and I wasn’t sure what she meant: the food, the work day, the hug?

“You’re welcome,” I replied sheepishly, internally smacking my forehead.

God, I’m so stu—

Then Kat pushed up on the balls of her feet and soft lips brushed over my cheek.

Chapter Ten

Kat

His eyes widened for a moment, then his gaze dropped to my lips. A soft sound escaped me and before I knew it, I was kissing him. Hard and deep. He tasted of something soft and warm I couldn’t quite place but could lose myself in.

In Roy.

My client.

Oh bloody hell, my client!

Tearing my lips away from his, I stared at him in mortification. “Sh-shit,” I stuttered, my voice so throaty it made me cringe in embarrassment. “Sorry, I—” But I didn’t know what to say to explain myself.

The air between us crackled with static, making my spine tingle. His breath came laboured as he held my gaze like it was magnetic.

Then a low snarl rumbled in his chest, at odds with the sweet, gentle man I’d seen so far. Roy exhaled shakily, and dragged me so roughly back against his bulky chest that I yelped. He lifted me off the ground and went to war with my mouth.

I couldn’t do much more than throw my arms around him and hold on for dear life, letting his tongue plunder me so thoroughly I saw stars.

Our breaths mingled, sharp pants and low moans echoing between us, not quite a thunderstorm but close. Bloody close judging by the way he suddenly pushed me up against the side of my car, one strong hand gripping my thigh just where my skirt ended, plushy fingers massaging my leg as his other cupped my cheek, thumb pressed to the tiny dimple in my chin. The slow spreading of my legs was entirely unintentional.

His thick thighs shifted against me and for a moment, I imagined spreading mine even wider, guiding them around his hips and grinding on the hard ridge of his cock.
