“Does your sister have a relationship with your Dad?” I ask him.

Ashton shakes his head. “Nope. He hasn’t bothered with her over the years. It’s the odd unsigned birthday card kinda thing. He doesn’t show much interest in her life.”

“That’s terrible.” I can’t understand why anyone would knowingly choose to be like this. Why would you even have children?

“She’s past the point of caring, and that’s probably the best thing when it comes to him. I spent a lot more time around him, so it’s harder for me to not be so involved since I lived with him for so long.”

“I’m sorry,” I say again.

“Anyway,” he blows it off. “Let’s not get into that. It’s kinda depressing talking about him. What do you want to do for the rest of the weekend?”

I raise my eyebrows with a giggle. “You mean before or after the game tomorrow?”

That has him grinning. “Ah, yes. I almost forgot. You know, I could cook for you tomorrow after the game?”

“You cook?”

He laughs, biting his lip. “Hey, I try to cook. I can make some things pretty well, so I tend to stick to those.”

“I won’t say no. That’s if my friends don’t accost you after the game.” They were both eager to come along after I texted them, as well as meet Ashton. I’m bummed that Emmerson won’t be back for the game, though she said she’s coming out on Monday to sort a few things out. A good catch-up is in order.

“I don’t mind,” he says. “We got plenty of time.”

It’s great knowing that. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for the weekend, and also what’s going to happen after we leave the restaurant.

I know we need to sort the sleeping dynamics out.

Am I really not going to go back to the Airbnb with him?

“Well, I’m glad you came to Miami,” I tell him. “I thought you were joking at first.”

He laughs. “Didn’t think I’d see it through, huh?”

“It just seemed like a long way to come, even if you were seeing your Mom and Sister.”

“I didn’t mind at all.” He shrugs like it’s nothing. “The train was fine. It’s something I never do, and totally worth it, by the way.” He gives me a sexy smile. “I’d do it again and again, just to see you.”

I smile while taking a sip of wine. “You’re definitely different from the rest,” I say.

“Sounds like the guys you’ve dated have been ass-hats.”

“You could say that.” I sigh. “I thought all the good ones were taken, but here you are.”

“Flattery will get you everywhere, baby.”

I bite my lip at his words. Feeling the rush of warmth come over me at the way he watches me over the table. I can always feel the fire between us. That part is intense, even if the conversation is light. “Everywhere?”

“You’d be surprised.”

I can’t help but laugh. There’s no way we’ll be able to be alone together and not take things further. Look at what we did at the auction today!

The thought brings another rosy glow to my cheeks.

“As surprising as your camera skills.”

He laughs heartily now. “Don’t even get me started on that.”

“You are a bad boy, no matter what you say.”
