We exchanged numbers, and I’m nervous about texting him, even though I want to. I keep thinking about how we live in different places, how would this work?

He was talking about coming to visit his mom when the playoffs are over. Meeting again might be a bit crazy since we live in different cities and we’re both busy people, but I hope we can make it happen. It’s like I can’t help myself.

I’ve taken some kind of Ashton Rivers love candy, and I want more of it.

More than I know what to do with.

CHAPTER 3

Ashton

Present day

I’m on a high after winning the Stanley Cup Final. In the end, we didn’t play seven games. We beat Vegas in the fifth round.

Winning on our home turf is phenomenal. It’s the best night of my life, and I’m going to be basking in it for some time to come.

My mom calls as soon as we're off the ice; she’s so happy for me and the team. I don’t expect to hear from my dad, of course. Regardless, I know there will be celebrations with the guys all night.

Taylor is on an extra high because Emmerson came to the game, and they made it official that they are getting back together. You can’t wipe the smile off his face.

Seeing them together makes me think about Maddison again.

We’ve been texting back and forth since she left.

I decide to call her before I get too drunk and things get wild.

I also have a sudden craving to hear her voice more than anything else.

I had visions of her in the stands, her sexy little body adorning my team jersey again.

I know that’s a stupid vision because she isn’t mine. She’s in Florida, and I hardly know the girl.

But it doesn’t make me stop thinking about it.

She’s been on my mind constantly during the playoffs. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve whacked off to my own visions of us together in the last two weeks.

I’m definitely a guy who wears his heart on his sleeve, but I don’t want to freak her the fuck out if I tell her it’s driving me nuts that we live so far apart.

Later that night, I find a quiet storage room away from the club's music.

I dial and lean against the wall in anticipation. Maddison already texted me to say congrats earlier, and she was watching on the big screen.

I fucking hope she picks up.

I wait for three or four rings when it finally connects. That brief moment feels like forever.

“Hey,” she gushes.

“Sorry, it’s so late.” It’s definitely past midnight in Florida.

“It’s okay. I’m still up, doing some work on my laptop.”

“Burning the candle at both ends,” I muse. I do remember her confessing she was a bit of a workaholic.

“Always.” She laughs.

I suppress a groan. Her voice does things to me, and she has no idea.
