“My mind is all messed up right now, and I need a break. I think I’ll take some time off and go on a vacation. Maybe I can talk Mike into going with me. It will take his mind off of football for a while. Allison, what about you? Would you like to come along?”
Allison looked interested. “Where are you planning to go?” Why don’t all of us go?”
I want to explore somewhere different; I want to see other parts of the world,” he was really getting into this now, “Not Hawaii or Mexico. I want to see some jungles or somewhere no one goes. We are going to have the best vacation we’ve ever had.”
“I’m in,” Jase said, sitting down.
I turned to Bailey, who had just entered the room, “What’s going on?” she asked, sitting down near Allison. “Did Carly stay at her family’s house?”
“No, she left. She told me she no longer had Toby; he was the only reason she stayed around as long as she did. She misses Toby and doesn’t want to live within a thousand miles of Ryan—her words, not mine.”
“Poor Carly, she has had a rough life. The first time her husband hit her, she went home, and her mother told her that she made her bed, so she had to lie in it. It sounds like her mother wasn’t very kind. She’s why Carly married her husband, her mother wouldn’t stop telling Carly that she needed to get married, and stop waiting around for Ryan Reed to tell her he loves her. ”
“That woman was always cruel. I have always thought that,” Allison said.
“She’s a bitch, she has always treated Carly different than the other kids. Where is Mike?” Ryan said, going into the house.
“Some of his football buddies called him,” Bailey replied. I think he’s meeting them somewhere. So, who’s going on a vacation?”
“We are. You and Cole should come with us,” Allison said, glancing between Cole and me.
Bailey was shaking her head. “No, way, I want to catch this guy. I’m staying here, and this time I’ll catch this jerk. I’m thinking of being more in the open so he’ll find me, and I can kill him,”
“You will do no such thing. If anyone kills this guy, it will be me, and I don’t want you out of my sight. If they are all going on vacation and Mike will be meeting up with his buddies, then it’ll only be you and me staying here. This house is big; I’ll need you to stay close to me.”
When I turned to look at Bailey, she was smiling. “All of you have spoiled Cole. He thinks he is everyone's boss. You are not my boss, Cole,” Bailey said, glancing at Allison, and continued. “Carly promised she would stay with me for two days. Did she send me any message or perhaps an apology? What about her bag she has here?”
“She took her bag with her. Sorry, no, she left no message. I don’t think she was thinking clearly when she decided to leave the mountain. Carly loves this mountain as much as the rest of us, and I’m sure it was hard for her to leave.”
Cole glanced at me. “You don’t need Carly; she was staying until you became comfortable with everyone. She knew you’d start bossing people around after ten minutes,” I remarked, fully aware that Bailey was growing frustrated.
I knew Bailey wanted to stomp her foot, “I most certainly do not. You are the one who orders people around, not me,” Bailey demanded.
“I’ve never been one to boss people around, and you will be safe here with me. Believe me, I have no interest in getting into your bed if that’s what’s been bothering you.”
Bailey responded sharply, “My concern isn’t about that at all. I feel the same as you, but that’s not what’s worrying me. If you will excuse me, I’ll be leaving,” she declared.
I cursed myself for not thinking before speaking, as I sometimes blurt out words without considering the consequences. I glanced at the others in the room before abruptly getting up and following Bailey to her room.
“Bailey, I’m sorry,” I apologized through the door she had locked behind her. “I only meant to express that differently. What I meant was you don’t have to worry about me trying to make a move on you because you are safe with me,” I glanced down the hall, and my brothers and sister stood there shaking their heads.
“Bailey, can I please come in? I don’t want to discuss this through the door,” I waved my hand, signaling to my siblings to leave. I was sure they were still eavesdropping. “Bailey, sweetheart, I’m not good at this. Please open the door so we can talk.”
To my surprise, the door opened, and she pulled me inside. Her arms wrapped around me, and her soft lips met mine. At first, she seemed unsure, so I took control. My body was in charge now, and it clearly desired her, as evidenced by my hard-on pressing against her.
She mumbled something, but I was so engrossed in undressing her to pay attention. Suddenly, she stepped back and grabbed her bag,” I knew you were a damn liar,” she declared before leaving the room and then the house.
I chased after her, paying no heed to the Delta Force members getting out of their vehicles or Mike, who sat on the porch on the phone. I didn’t even notice the others following us outside. My sole focus was on one person walking away as fast as she could. I had to do something.
“Fine, I admit it,” I confessed as I caught up with her. “I want you. You fucking drive me insane with desire. You wear those shorts that show your ass and that tank top—well, you might as well not be wearing it. The damn thing is practically transparent.”
“I’ve been trying not to want you. I’ve only known you for a couple of days. I wanted you the moment I saw you. Sometimes, I think you’re genuinely crazy. You carry a gun but don’t know how to use it. You claim you’ve taught yourself self-defense; all you know is how to kick someone.”
I fell silent as Bailey turned around, her eyes filled with determination. “You lied. I knew you wanted me. So please don’t deny it again. It’s not going to happen. You stay in your room, and I will remain in mine.”
It was then that I noticed the audience watching us. I approached Bailey, “You’ll sleep in the room next to me tonight.”
“No, I will not!” Bailey protested. “I told you I’m fine where I am. Cole, you can’t tell me what to do.”
