We were there for two hours when the doctor came to talk to us. “Bailey has nine stab wounds. Three of them are on her hands, where she held them up to keep the knife away from her heart. She’s very lucky she’s alive. Those wounds are in some very dangerous places. She has bruises around her neck where he tried to strangle her. So, I’m going to assume she fought like hell to save her life.”
“When can I see her?”
“She’ll be in intensive care for a couple of days. You can visit her there, no talking. I want her to sleep as long as she can. She’s going to be in lots of pain when she wakes up. If you have any questions, tell the nurse to get hold of me.”
“Thank you,” I looked at Bailey’s family. Mostly, all of the mountain was here at the hospital. I’m going to tell all of you something,” I said, glancing at them. “I love Bailey more than anything in this world. I failed at protecting her, but that won’t happen again. That’s all I wanted to tell you.”
“Izzy, you can go with me and see your sister. I know how happy she was to find out she had a sister,” We walked into the little cubical where her bed was, and she smiled. Izzy and I were so surprised.
“That was close. Is he dead? I missed you, am I allowed to tell you that?”
“Yes, sweetheart, he’s dead. I missed you too, and yes, you can tell me any time you want.”
“I hope a fourth one doesn’t pop out of the trees. Izzy, you get home to your family. I’m going to be fine. I used some of the self-defense I taught myself. I’ve forced myself to stay awake because I wanted to tell you something, Cole. You can get angry if you want, but the truth has to be told. I love you, there I said it. Now I’m going to sleep.”
“Not before I tell you I love you too. I love you more than anything in the world. When you get better, we are getting married.”
“Not until you ask me properly,” I knew she was asleep before I could say anything else.
I looked at Izzy, “Well, that turned out better than I thought. Can you tell your family how she is? I’m going to stay here with Bailey.”
Izzy chuckled. “I knew if I ever had a sister, she would be just like Bailey. How can you not love her?”
“Exactly. How can I not love Bailey Peterson?”

Steel stood by the window, his arms crossed, “Why hasn’t she woken up?”
“I’ve lost count how many times you asked that,” I replied. “I’ll tell you the same thing as I told you before. I don’t know why she hasn’t awakened. The doctor says she’s healing while she sleeps. So we’ll stay the hell quiet and let her sleep.”
“It’s been three days. What if one of the wounds is infected, and the poison is spreading through her body?”
“Bailey is in the hospital. If she has an infection, they would know.”
“Not always,” Steel argued, clearly concerned. “I need to go home.”
“Steel, all I’m doing is sleeping. I’m not infected with poison running through my body,” Bailey chuckled.
Then she opened her eyes and looked at me. “Did you tell me you love me?”
“Yes, sweetheart, and you told me you love me too. I have something to ask you. Bailey Peterson. Will you marry me? I promise I will keep you way safer than I have been. I love you and want to start a family with you.”
“Well, say something,” Steel said, walking near the bed.
Bailey, giggled. “Yes, I will marry you. I want kids, so we’ll need to expand the cabin. I’ve already been planning.”
I couldn’t help but smile. “Alright, I’ll start building when you come home. I leaned in and kissed her. I love you so much.”
“I love you, too. I’m so glad I can tell you. I thought I would die and never get the chance to say it. We will have a happy family like my sister Izzy,” Bailey didn’t know I had worried about the same thing.
“Yes, we will, sweetheart. Steel and all your other cousins can help me start building next week.”
“I will be happy to help build more rooms onto the cabin. Did you know it was the very first cabin a Peterson lived in on our mountain? Now, it will be passed down in our family for generations.”
“Goodbye, Steel,” I said, ushering him toward the door. He kissed Bailey on the forehead before leaving.
