“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

I brewed a cup of tea, sat down, took a sip, and the phone rang. Mike answered.

“Okay, I’ll let Bailey know. Be careful,” He turned and looked at me. “They have a lead; hopefully, everything will work out.”

“I hope so. Man I would love some coffee right now, maybe I’ll get some of that decaffeinated coffee.”

“I’m sure you can make it taste as good as the real stuff.”

“Ryan, please, let’s use our heads. It won’t help Carly if you get yourself killed.”

“I’m not being reckless, Cole. I just want to rescue Carly before it’s too late, and you know what I mean. Wait! Is that them?”

I heard Ryan roar when we saw Carly fighting off three men. She was holding her own until one of them hit her hard with a large piece of wood. Another one took out his gun and aimed it, but Ryan’s shout diverted his attention. Carly glanced at Ryan, then pushed herself up and kicked the gun from the guy's hand. But another assailant kicked her hard, and I saw her head hit the tree before she crumpled to the ground.”

Ryan rushed to Carly’s side while I aimed and shot two of the men. The third one made a run for it, and I pursued him. I was almost upon him when he jumped from the bridge onto the freeway, meeting instant death by an oncoming eighteen-wheeler.

Sirens wailed as I returned to Ryan and Carly. Ryan was frantically working on Carly, pleading for her to wake up. I saw the anguish on his face, and it was evident he was desperate to keep her alive.

“Let me see her,” I said, examining the back of her head. It was clear that the blow had caused her to lose consciousness.

“How is it?” Ryan asked,

“It’s not good. When he kicked her, she flew back and struck her head on the tree.”

“What about the other guy?”

He jumped onto the freeway and was crushed by an eighteen-wheeler. So all of them are dead. I also checked the van and found some papers the cops might be interested in.”

The ambulance pulled up, and they took over Carly’s treatment; then she was loaded onto the gurney and began loading her with Ryan right beside them.

“We’ll follow behind you…” I began to say until Ryan interrupted.

“I’m going with Carly,” Ryan asserted, addressing both men.

“We don’t allow anyone in the ambulance. You’ll have to follow in your vehicle.”

“I said I’m going with Carly,” Now, let’s get going. Be careful with her head.” Ryan helped the EMTs load Carly into the ambulance before climbing inside himself. I followed the ambulance to the hospital, calling Bailey along the way.

“Did you find her?”

“Yes, the ambulance is taking her to the hospital. I doubt Ryan will leave the hospital. I’ve never seen him like this. He really loves her. I don’t know why he never told her. I pray she’ll be alright. Her head injury looks pretty bad.”

“I hope she recovers. When Ryan first saw her, I could see it in his eyes that he loved her. He was hurt because she married someone else, and her heart hurt when she saw him with that woman. Ryan has never forgiven her because she married Jim Harlow. They are both too stubborn to reconcile. When she wakes up, Ryan needs to tell her he loves her and has always loved her.”

“I’m sure he will. I’ll talk to him if I get a chance. By the way, they have a hotel near the hospital. Alright, we’re here. I’ll call you after Carly sees a doctor. I love you, sweetheart. How was your night.”

“I had a nightmare, and Mike came in when he heard me screaming. I’ll be relieved when these dreams finally stop. Don’t worry about me; Allison is sleeping in our room tonight.”

“That’s a relief. I’ll call you later and update you on how things are here.”

“Okay, bye.”

I got a hotel room, and then I went searching for Ryan. I found him pacing in the waiting room. “I got us a room across the street,” Ryan looked like he wanted to say something to me but changed his mind, choosing to sit beside me and steal a glance.
