I carried her to the bed and fixed the pillows then I pulled the sheet up over her top and knees. Bailey raised her knees, and I could see the baby’s head.

I could see the baby, and my training as a medic took over. I was confident I could deliver my own baby. As I glanced at Bailey propped up on pillows, I had to blink a few times. Standing beside my beautiful wife was her beautiful sister, Jackie. I felt a tear roll down my cheek I blinked, and then I blinked again, and she was gone.

Bailey caught my gaze and smiled. I smiled back, wondering if she had seen Jackie or felt her presence. I wanted to kiss her, but I couldn't leave this spot. Twenty minutes later, we were laughing over the loud cries of our daughter. While Izzy cleaned her up, I held my wife, tears streaming down my face.

“She’s beautiful, just beautiful. Did you notice how dark her hair is?” Izzy placed the baby on Bailey’s chest, and she finally settled down. Bailey sobbed, “I wish Jackie could see our baby girl. Baby Jackie, she’s beautiful.”

I took the baby, and we walked back to Bailey. “Yes, come with Daddy sweet pea. You’re such a beautiful baby. Look at you, oh Lord, you have the Peterson’s silver eyes.”

There was a knock at the door, and Steel appeared. “Word got around that there was an ambulance on its way here. I had a feeling the baby arrived. Let me see her.”

He grinned when he saw the color of our baby’s eyes. “She has the Peterson’s eyes. So, what’s her name?”

“Her name is Jacqueline; we haven’t decided on a middle name.”

“Oh well, I’m sure it will be perfect, right?” Steel remarked.

“Cole, could you bring Jackie Rose back in here to me? I need to feed her,” Bailey called out.

“So, I guess you have a name now,” I said, kissing my baby girl on her plump little cheek. Steel, why don’t you say hello to Bailey.”

“Congratulations on your beautiful baby,” Steel said with a big smile.

I debated telling Bailey who I saw standing next to her but decided to keep it to myself. Izzy left for home, and I crawled into bed with the baby between us. Bailey and Jackie were sleeping, and I thanked the Lord for bringing Bailey into my life.

I used to think I'd never get serious or fall in love, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Bailey and our sweet baby girl were the best things that ever happened to me. Falling in love had turned out to be a truly wonderful experience.

The End

Bonus for Viper and Bailey

“Bailey, what are you doing up there? I told you I’d check and see what was up there as soon as I returned,” I spoke in a hushed tone, worried that if I yelled, she might try to rush down and fall. So, I took a deep breath and managed a smile.

“Yes, but the noise was getting louder, and it was driving me crazy,” Bailey replied while standing at the edge of the roof.

“Well, can you see anything since you’re up there? Please get away from the edge.”

“Yes, I can see three distressed baby raccoons,” she said, walking back to the Raccoons. “Something must have happened to Mama Raccoon. These guys must be hungry. I’ll see if I can help them.”

“Do not touch those wild Raccoons,” I roared loud enough for every one of her relatives to hear. “Even if they are babies, they will tear your flesh to shreds. Don’t forget they are wild.”

“They’re too small to hurt me. For Pete’s sake, they are just babies,” she retorted, bending over and looking at the baby raccoons as I joined her on top of the roof.

“I’ll take care of the babies, and you get down off this roof. I hear Jackie waking up; she must be hungry,” I told a little white lie, knowing it would at least get her safely back to the ground.

“Oh heck, I better hurry then; that girl has a set of lungs as loud as her daddy,” Bailey said, half-jokingly.

“Don’t rush, or you might fall. Sweetheart, please promise you won’t climb on the roof again,” I saw her roll her eyes; as she turned, I pulled her close to me and kissed her. What was supposed to be a quick kiss, turned into a passionate one.

“What the hell are you two doing on the fucking roof. Get a room!” I groaned out loud; of course, Steel would catch us in the act.

“Could you get me a bag to put these baby raccoons in? Something must have happened to their mother, and they’ve been making a lot of noise lately,” Viper requested.

I watched as Steel helped Bailey down, and she ran in and got him a bag before walking inside. The Peterson cabin had undergone significant changes, with numerous rooms added. The kitchen was now spacious, and the gathering spot when our family visited.
