“Yes, I’m fine, thank you,” I said as he placed a hamburger in front of me. Then he gave one to Jaz, the boys sat down and started eating their hamburgers. Before I knew it, they were finished and eating their fries.

Levi sat down and placed two yogurts in front of the boys. Who started eating them along with their fries. I couldn’t help but laugh as they dipped their fries into their yogurt.

“You’re so lucky to have these little guys. They are so precious.”

“Thank you. I was truly blessed when my boys were born. Keeping up with them is a challenge. So I bring them here, and Steel helps me; they don’t try anything with him around. All he has to do is look at them, and they sit still.”

I chuckled. “I bet they’re full of energy. Do you live close by?”

Jaz nodded, “I live just down the street from here. Our entire family lives close by. Our parents retired to Miami, but they’re moving back.”

“It’s so nice that you can visit your brother whenever you want. I grew up with my cousin Marcus. He’s an FBI special agent, and he’s been undercover for two years, so I hardly ever get to see him. There were no other kids in our family.”

“I imagine that was lonely for you.”

“No, it wasn’t, I wasn’t used to having other kids around so it was okay. My dad was like having kids around, and I was never lonely. He was always busy inventing things and wanted me involved in his projects.”

“How cool. Did you invent anything yourself?”

“Yeah, I invented a few things. Once you start, you keep trying new things.”

“What did you invent?”

“Just some small items to help you stack stuff in the kitchen or bathroom.”

“Oh my goodness, did you invent Stackable No Space?”

“Yeah, that was one of my inventions. I invented that in college because I had no space for anything.”

“I have that in my kitchen and bathroom. My house is super small, so I need all the space-saving solutions I can get.”

“I’m glad you find them useful. I also use the stackables on my dresser for small items, so my dresser isn’t cluttered; I’m a collector of little things, so my dresser fills up fast,” I said, glancing at Levi, who had been listening to our conversation.

“So, you’re not just a homicide detective but also an entrepreneur?” Levi said, looking at me.

“Yeah, it’s a bit of a habit. I guess I take after my father,” I realized I hadn’t noticed the sparkles in his eyes before. Staying here with Levi was proving to be a tempting proposition, and I was no longer angry at him for his past behavior. Since I now knew how horrible a day he was having that day. His poor dog had died. He must have been heartbroken.

“How about if we do some more workouts this evening? That way, you won’t overexert yourself.”

“Sure, that sounds good. Can I use the gym anytime to work on the parallel bars?”

“Of course, as long as you don’t push yourself too hard.”

“I’m going to make sure Sara isn’t getting into trouble. She’s used to being in a fenced yard. I’m sure she’s having a blast right now. If it’s okay with you, I’ll bring her inside for a while.”

“Let me get her for you, or would you prefer to sit on the porch?”

“I would love that, thank you.”

“I should get these two little guys home before they fall asleep; it’s nap time,” Jaz said, gathering her boys.

I got my crutches, went to the front porch, and stopped. Sara and a German shepherd were stuck together. I hadn’t even had her spayed yet.

Steel glanced at the dogs for a second. “Damn it, Spike, I’m going to have to keep you penned up. I didn’t want to, but it has to be done,” Levi said before turning to look at me. Jaz giggled as she walked off the porch.

“I honestly don’t know what to say,” Levi remarked, but I could see the laughter in his eyes.

“There really isn’t a lot to say. Dogs are naturally horny, right?” I said, with a chuckle.
