“Well, I know Spike is,” Both of us laughed, and I realized I hadn’t laughed much in the last few years. Being a homicide detective didn’t leave much room for laughter.

“Sam, where the heck are you? I’m going to have to restrict your freedom,” a beautiful woman said, looking our way. Then Levi glanced at the dogs again.

“Bailey, here he is.”

The woman I now knew as Bailey smiled until she saw the dogs and then screamed. “Who taught him this stuff? Sam, you are a naughty dog. Whose dog is the other one? This is so bad.”

“Bailey, this is Charlotte. The naughty dog belongs to her, and I don’t think she appreciates you calling her dog that.”

“I did not call her dog that; you did. If I did, I’m sorry, but I said Sam was naughty. I’m just in shock at seeing my dog doing this. Can we please walk on the other side of the house? I can’t bear to look at them. I’ll never look at Sam the same way. I’m happy to meet you, Charlotte.”

“Don’t worry about it, Bailey; I don’t like looking at them either. So if Sam is with Sara, where is Spike?” I asked, looking at Levi.

“Spike,” he yelled, walking away. I wondered if I could stand; he looked concerned, and my heart went out to him. I wanted to help him find Spike because I remembered he was concerned about Spike getting older.

“Come on, boy, what are you doing? Going under the house like that, you could get stuck under there. I want you to meet someone. “Charlie, this is Spike. He’s a good dog.”

The porch was a wrap-around, and now we were out of sight of the dogs stuck together. That’s when Sara walked around the house, and Spike knew what he wanted. Sara ran to him, and before I could stop her, she ran around the house with Spike.

“Damn it, Sara, you are embarrassing me. What’s gotten into my dog? She’s usually so sweet; what the hell has happened to her? Don’t answer that.”

“There’s nothing you can do. Once they get a taste for it, they’ll never stop. That’s what Cole says, anyway.” Bailey said, laughing.

“You’re married to Cole Reed; that sounds like something he would say.”

“Do you know Cole?”

“I haven’t seen him since I was a teenager. I used to visit my aunts; they’re the Randal sisters.

“Oh, I love them. They’re so sweet. Are they your great aunts?”

“No, they are my regular aunts. My grandmother was in her fifties when she had my father; he was a surprise baby. They think I should stay with Levi so he can help me walk again…” I never had a chance to finish my sentence because Levi interrupted me.

“I will help you, and I’ll have you running up the mountain with Bailey; she runs all over this place.”

“I don’t run that much anymore. I have two children, and, as you can see, another is on the way. But I do walk a lot, so we can walk together as soon as you’re able. I usually push a stroller; if you go with me, we can push two strollers.”

“I would love to walk with you. How old are your children?”

“Jackie, she’s our first child. She’ll be two next month, and Grace turned one last month,” Bailey said, smiling. Maybe this one will be a boy, but if not, maybe the next one will be. We are going to fill our house with love and children.”

“That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard,” I said. I quickly wiped the moisture from my eyes. I was the one who chose my path, so what if I wanted to change my mind and have a house full of babies? I was only thinking like this because that doctor said I might not ever have a child. I won’t think of it again.
