“Anything to get out of making money, huh?” he growled. “You’ll stay and work. King or no king,” he spat.

I didn’t stop to think about what I was doing, my steps carrying me toward the pimp, a punch untangling him from the trembling fae at his side.

She reeled back as her handler sputtered. My guard and Saint both flocked to me before he could amble to his feet. The pimp eyed me contemplatively, and I silently willed him to hit me.

Come on. Give me a reason, you piece of shit.

Our eyes clashed, but he looked away first.

“Stay down,” the Royal Guard ordered as the female mewled, covering her face with her hands.

“Why did you say that?” I demanded, turning away from her pimp entirely as Saint and the guard stayed on him.

She shook her head and bawled, terrified.

“Answer me,” I urged, my voice kind but firm. “Why did you say there’s going to be trouble? Did you see something? Do you know something?”

“She doesn’t know shit!” her procurer yelled, trying to stand up after my blow.

“Stay down, or next time, you won’t be able to get up,” Saint promised him as I stepped closer to the female.

“Look at me,” I begged her. “I know something’s happened to Miss Elix. If you know who took her…” I glanced back at her male companion, and bile swished in my gut. “Was it him?”

Oh, please don’t let it be that situation…

“NO!” they both yelled in unison, her hands falling as she shook her head vehemently.

“Someone like him?” I insisted.

She shook her head again, her chin trembling. “No, Alpha. She didn’t go with a male…”

I nodded encouragingly. “Tell me,” I insisted. “Her life is in danger. She might be hurt or worse already.” She bit on her lower lip and tried to peek at her pimp, but I stood between them. “Come on!”

“There was a female.”

Stunned, I stared at her. “A female?”

“I saw them together. I recognized Miss Elix, and I told him…” she whispered, dropping her head, shamed. “He told me to mind my own business.”

Cold dread tickled down my spine. I glanced back at her pimp and shook my head. I wanted to throttle him with my bare hands.

“Saw them how?” I pressed. “Walking? Talking? What were they doing?”

She bit on her lower lip so hard, she drew blood, and I filled the last bit of space between us.

“She was using magic to pull Miss Elix along,” she muttered.

My eyebrows knitted, and I almost shook her, the process taking too long for my liking.

“What are you saying? How?” I growled. “How was she using magic on Miss Elix?”

“Miss Elix was… sleeping.”

Rage and indignation rushed through me. “And no one did anything?!”

The young fae backed away, and I steeled my temper, knowing that it wasn’t her fault. I whipped around to unleash my wrath on her pimp instead, but before I could, Cirilla’s excited voice reached my ears. The enchantress rushed out of the back office, a page in her hand.

“What is it?” I called, hearing the excitement in her voice.
