“ELIX, NO!”

“You idiot!” I hissed, leaping up as flames licked at the bed, and Lysandra backed in the opposite direction, her dark eyes bugging and livid. “You really think I would side with you? I am loyal to Goldhaven and Jace, not your one-fae cult! Stay away from me!”

Without waiting for her response, I whirled and fled, flying from the open window and into the night, not caring about the two-story drop below. I hit the grass rolling as Lysandra’s howls filled the night and started to run toward the woods in front of me, not bothering to look back once. Wind rushed through my face, my lungs ready to burst as my bare feet pounded against the ground.

“YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE END OF ME!” Lysandra screamed.

I had no doubt that she was telling me the truth, but she would have to find me first. And this time, she didn’t have anyone following me. I’d make sure of that.

Chapter 6

Jace

The entire cabin of the plane was charged with chaotic energy. I had a phone pressed to my ear, Cirilla had one pressed to hers. The Royal Guards sat upright and tense, looking every which way as if they expected an attack on the plane.

“Yes, Alpha, I’m certain,” Cirilla said, casting me a look across the private jet. “I’m sorry to disturb you at this hour, but you must enact your Royal Guards at once.”

I signaled to the enchantress to put the phone on speaker, but she didn’t understand with my still phone at my ear.

“Jace, are you still there?” The concern in King Cade’s voice was palpable. “What is going on? It’s hard to hear you with all the background noise.”

“I’m on my way to Silverhold,” I told him. “I need you and the Queen to be extra vigilant until I know what’s going on, but it seems like the Order of Souls may not be extinguished yet.”

Silence met my comment. “Are you saying Agnan’s still alive?” Cade finally sputtered.

“No, of course not,” I replied tersely. “I don’t have time to fill you in right now, Cade. Elix is still missing, but there may be others trying to take Agnan’s place.”

“Do you need reinforcements?” he demanded.

“I’m working on that from Silverhold,” I replied, nodding at Cirilla again and reaching for her cell phone now. “I have King Zen on the other line.”

“Please keep me updated, Jace.”

“Will do, Cade. Give my best to Zephyrine.” I disconnected the call with Cade and nodded at the enchantress. Zen’s voice drifted through the speaker of Cirilla’s mobile toward me.

“Cirilla? Are you still there?”

“Zen, it’s Jace.”

“Jace! What the fuck is happening?” he demanded. “What is your enchantress saying? I can’t understand any of what’s happening.”

“We have evidence that there might be a threat by the Order of Souls,” I announced, ignoring Cirilla’s grimace. I know she had hoped for more diplomacy, but I didn’t care.

“What? That’s crazy, Jace. We’ve dealt with that!”

“Tell me about Lysandra,” I demanded of him, willing the plane to move faster. We were still an hour out of Silverhold, but I wasn’t sure my nerves were going to keep. I wouldn’t rest until I knew where Elix was.

“Lysandra?” he repeated, sounding confused. “She was one of the orphans who Agnan recruited. Should I get Miri for this? What is going on?”

I ground my teeth together. “If she’s available, I may need her expertise on this matter as well. It seems she’s taken my…”

I faltered. What was Elix to me now? My future queen? Could I still marry her, knowing what I knew about her bloodline? How would that fly in the kingdom? How could I protect her from what people would say? Would anyone still respect my judgment as king?

“Jace? Are you there?” Zen’s voice brought me back to the interior of the plane.

“I’m here.”

“I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
