“They were definitely on this road toward Silverhold, but…”

“BUT WHAT?” Llyodiver peered at us through the rear-view, but I ignored him, my attention fixed on Solomon. “What are you saying, Solomon?”

The white-bearded sorcerer shook his head, dropping his open palms worriedly. “I think the one with dark magic is onto us, Alpha. There’s a blocker up now, preventing me from locating them.”

I drew back, my jaw slacking in disbelief. “Then unblock the blocker!” I snapped. I stared at Cirilla. “You can circumvent it, can’t you?”

“Maybe,” Cirilla agreed.

“PULL OVER!” I yelled at Llyodiver, panic seizing me as I suddenly realized we might be going in the wrong direction. Immediately, the guard obliged, the train of armored cars behind us following suit.

I turned to the warlock and enchantress. “You have to do something!”

Cirilla exhaled shakily and nodded. “We’ll do what we can, Alpha, but in the meantime, you better call King Zen and get your hands on as many reinforcements as you can. This has become an all hands on deck situation now.”

Chapter 16

Elix

“Jace?”

The taunting giggle that responded before my eyes even opened overtook the dull thud of my head and flew my eyelids apart, making me distinctly aware of the fact that I was riding in a car.

And I was not withJace.

Morning light filtered through the windows, and Lysandra’s dark hair shone in the rays streaking through as I tried to move.

“You have got to be shitting me!” I cried, frustration and anxiety sweeping through me. “What are you doing, Lysandra?”

“I warned you that you can’t escape me, sis,” she chirped, her fingers curling around the steering wheel as she drove. “Don’t fight it. I can’t risk you attacking me until we get to where we’re going.”

“Where the fuck are we going?” I barked. “This is insane, Lysandra. I’ve already made it clear that I don’t want to help you?—”

“Stop yelling,” she snapped, her amusement fading entirely. “Yeah, you left me in a fire to die. So you made it pretty clear. Butthat doesn’t matter. You’re still my blood, and I can’t abandon you.”

I scoffed and strained against the invisible chains, holding me against the backseat, but the effort was futile. She glanced over her shoulder, and I wished I could look out the window to see where we were headed. We’d clearly been driving all night, but how she’d managed to get me?—

“JACE!” I screamed, almost breaking through the chains in my panic. “WHAT DID YOU DO?”

“Oh, relax,” she snarled. “He’s fine. For now.”

I exhaled, but my heart continued to race wildly. I didn’t trust her in the least. “How did you manage to get me out of there? I mean, it’s obvious you drugged me.”

“Me? I can’t get within fifty feet of you now that you ran back to your Loverboy,” Lysandra taunted. “You are such a disappointment, Elix. I expected so much better of you.”

Her tone was odd, different in a way I couldn’t explain, and I cocked my head to hear her better against the rush of the car’s wheels against the road. I harnessed my senses, trying to identify any of the sounds in passing, to understand where I was, but knowing Lysandra, I could be anywhere now.

“You managed to get at me some way, Lysandra,” I encouraged, determined to keep her talking, my eyes straining against the door of the car. All I could see was the blue of the early morning sky, ivory clouds drifting by.

I’m stronger than her. All of my training, my weeks of working with the elemental faeries, has to account for something.

But against these invisible chains, my practice with Arya, Vivette, Calandria, and Santrina meant nothing. I willed myself to muster all my elements, but the effort was futile.

“I had help,” she admitted. “And the more I think about it, the more I see that I’m going to need help if we’re going to do what needs to be done.”

I swallowed thickly. “Is that where we’re going, then? To find help?”

“Thanks to you, the Anti-Order has no home again,” Lysandra said smugly. “They’re uprooted as Homage is being rebuilt, and that must have them reconsidering their loyalties. You burnt down their home and made them mad. Got them all thinking that maybe the King and Queen of Silverhold couldn’t protect them after all.”
