I shifted in my seat, sweat breaking out over my forehead as he smoothly and evenly slid his skillful fingers against me, driving me higher. It seemed as if all eyes were on me, but that didn’t deter me from reaching my breaking point.

I mewled and stopped the cry from reaching fruition by stuffing a dinner roll in my mouth as my eyes teared. My climax built with Jace’s grin, my eyes rolling, but somehow, I managed to keep it together, even as I burst inside, ecstasy pulsating through me.

“What’s the matter, Jace?” King Cade called over as I quivered with as much discretion as possible. “Don’t you care for the soup?”

Jace removed his hand from my lap and smiled at the king.

“I was just waiting for it to cool off,” he replied, lifting his spoon with his right hand. When the king turned away, he looked back at me, popping his left index finger into his mouth to suck on it long and deliberately. I smothered another groan of pleasure.

“Temperature is perfect now,” he told me flirtatiously, and I almost melted into a puddle on the floor right there.

Chapter 12

Jace

It took everything in me to keep from licking Elix off me all through dinner, but as the meal wound to a close, I suddenly found myself afraid to be alone with her.

What came over me?

Well, besides Elix.

I smiled to myself, again running my finger over my lips and relishing the linger of her fragrance, and I watched her walk with the queen. But before I could catch up with her, Cade found me, stopping me.

He pulled me aside as the other guests filtered out, Zephy and Elix strolling ahead with the guards. They didn’t seem to notice that we’d stopped.

“Dinner was perfect,” I informed him. “Thank you for everything.”

I wasn’t stupid—I knew he was going to bring up what happened with the minister again, and he did—right on cue.

“Never mind that,” Cade said seriously. “What happened with Thaddieus earlier?”

My smile faded, the memory of the minister’s accusations sitting uncomfortably with me.

“It’s not important,” I said, but Cade disagreed.

“I need to know how to deal with him. Whatever happened won’t go beyond my lips. You know that, Jace.”

Exhaling, I reluctantly told him. If the shoe were on the other foot, I’d want to know what had been said.

“He basically accused Elix of being tainted with dark magic,” I explained gruffly. “And he wasn’t particularly quiet about it.”

“Is she?” Cade asked bluntly. I scowled but reminded myself that Cade was nothing if not forthcoming. He wasn’t asking to be a prick. He was interested in the answer.

“Of course not. Would I bring dark magic into my palace?”

Cade studied me pensively, as if he was debating whether to say his next words.

“What is it, Cade?” I asked tiredly. “You can tell me. I can take it.”

“Fine. Since you asked,” he agreed. “There have been a lot of rumors and speculation about where Miss Elix gets her powers from. Thaddieus may be an ass, but he has a point—those are not common abilities for a fae to possess. Surely you must have considered that yourself.”

I didn’t like this conversation, but I had asked for him to be frank about it.

“This is Elix’s concern, and it has nothing to do with Thaddieus,” I demanded. “Or anyone else’s.”

“I hope you know I’m speaking to you as an ally, not an enemy. She seems lovely, and she obviously cares for you very much,” Cade told me. “All the same, it’s your throne and kingdom that fall under risk if you bring in dark forces, and once they’re within your walls, they aren’t so easy to remove. So no, it’s not just Elix’s issue.”

“Your concerns are noted,” I said stiffly. “Thank you for your hospitality these past days.”
