I can’t let her go. Cirilla’s right. But I can’t let her stay, either.

A moment later, the acrid smell of brimstone touched my nostrils, and I turned to confront Cirilla again. A sheepish, worried expression overtook her face.

“What?” I growled.

“She’s not here,” Cirilla mumbled.

“What do you mean, she’s not here?”

“I mean, she took one of the cars and left.”

Shocked and furious, I stalked around the desk. “She took a car?!”

“Well, she asked a driver to take her to the city,” Cirilla explained. “Back to her brother’s apartment.”

I relaxed slightly, but I was still incensed. “And her guards?”

“She shook them.”

“I am about two seconds away from replacing every single member of this staff,” I threatened, storming toward the door. “Get me a car. I’m going into Geldon.”

I almost turnedthe driver around several times as we drove into the deserted city in the middle of the night. Nothing graced the quiet streets but a few drunken kids, spilling from the bars to continue the party onto the sidewalks under the eerie glow of the streetlamps.

By the time we pulled out in front of Saint’s modern building complex, I had completely lost my nerve to confront him and Elix, the rehearsed speech falling out of my mind.

Nothing but a deep sense of loss sat in the depth of my soul as I stared at the handsome structure, a hundred memories of my old friend and I running through the palace together as children dancing through my mind.

He knew all along. The kid I grew up with, that I trusted more than anyone, knew that his sister was corrupted and brought her into my fold.

And I had fallen in love with her.

“Alpha, this is it,” the driver informed me after a long moment.

“I know,” I growled.

“Yes, Alpha.” He retreated back to stare out of the windshield as I inhaled and let myself out of the back of the magic armored SUV. The vehicle glittered as I slammed the door shut, startling a nearby homeless warlock who grunted in disapproval. The sight of him took me aback in such a middle-class neighborhood, but I realized I was out of touch.

“You might look like the king, but he has more class!” the old timer growled at me.

You’d be surprised,I almost retorted, striding up toward the steps, my hand tightening over the railing as I moved.

A tittering group of college-aged boys blinked, swaying as they set eyes on me.

“Is that the king?” they whispered. “Go check out his ride.”

“Don’t even think about it,” I barked, baring my teeth, and they recoiled in unison as I let myself into the building.

Their building was nice, modern, but in need of touch-ups. It was no Goldhaven Palace, but I imagined that compared to the single room the family had shared as children, it was a palace of their own making.

Still, it made me want to do better for both Elix and Saint, conflicting me more as I made my way into the elevator.

It doesn’t change the fact that Saint and Elix have been lying to me… or at least Saint has been.

And it didn’t change the face that Elix was infused with dark magic. I couldn’t allow that into my realm. For the good of the kingdom, no matter how I felt about her. Could I?

I cast my guards a backward look, but they didn’t seem to read my internal conflict as we walked.

“Wait here,” I told them, nodding at the stairwell.
