“Alpha, this is not a very secure spot,” Llyodiver pointed out.

“No shit,” I agreed. “But I can handle it from here. Keep an eye out for trouble.”

“As you wish, Alpha,” the head of the Royal Guards agreed, nodding at his partner.

I found myself in front of the apartment, drawing in a breath, my ears honed for movements inside.

The silence unnerved me, but I could smell Elix inside. Before I could change my mind, I raised my fist and knocked. For a long moment, there was nothing, no sounds, no indication that anyone was coming.

“Saint,” I called gruffly. “Open up.”

The sound of my voice caused a reaction, and suddenly, I heard muffled voices through the walls. I enacted my wolf’s ears to listen acutely to what they were saying.

“…call him?” Elix demanded.

“No! Did you?” Saint countered.

“Why would I call him? I told you I wasn’t going back there!”

“Open the door, Elix. He’s obviously here for you.”

“He called your name!”

I knocked again. “I can hear you in there,” I informed them tersely.

The door opened, and I found myself staring at Saint, who looked at me coldly. I’d never seen his eyes so frigid.

“What are you doing here, Jace?”

I returned his look, folding my arms over my chest. “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

“It’s not really fit for a king,” he replied sarcastically, but he stepped back and allowed me inside.

My eyes trailed through the small apartment. Without Elix there, it was clear that Saint was letting the place go.

“We were just coming to see you,” Saint informed me.

“I need to speak with both of you,” I informed him coldly, looking around for Elix, but she didn’t materialize, and I understood that she was waiting for me to leave. Stifling a sigh, Iturned to Saint as he closed the door, shoving it with his hip and securing it with two locks.

Saint’s eyes narrowed. “Why didn’t you tell me that you were in a real relationship with my sister?”

I winced internally but maintained my stony face, refusing to accept the full brunt of wrongdoing here. “Really? Do you want to start hurtling out accusations and blame? You knew that your sister was tainted?—”

“Watch yourself, Jace,” Saint warned, advancing on me angrily. “My sister isnottainted.”

Instantly, I backed down, shame consuming me as I darted my gaze back toward one of the closed bedroom doors, where I was sure she was listening. “You know what I mean. She has dark magic in her. You knew all about that.”

“I didn’t!” Saint fired back defiantly. “And neither did Elix. And you wouldn’t have known, either, if you didn’t keep harping at it. I warned both of you, but you wouldn’t let it go. You should have just left it alone!”

I grunted. “You really believe that we would have been better off not knowing?”

“Don’t you?” he challenged. “Wasn’t your life better before you found out?”

I opened my mouth to argue, but his words sunk in, and I realized that he was right. Before the world had come crashing down, Elix and I had been happy. We’d been in love.

But obliviously in love.

“I want to know everything,” I growled. “I need to understand how this happened.”
