Maybe he'll continue to use his key. Maybe one day, he'll use it everyday. But I shouldn't get ahead of myself.

I need forgiveness before I'm worrying about domestic futures.

"Why does it smell so good in… here…" Echo says as he enters the dining room. I haven't done anything fancy. There's nothing changed about the space, but when his eyes flick from my plate to my face, I see it. Something is different.

I didn't do much, but I did it right. I could cry tears of joy right now.

"What— What's this?" he asks, frozen in place. He looks unsure, like he doesnt know what to do with himself in this situation

"Dinner." I say, gesturing to his usual spot. "Sit."

"But— but why?"

"Do I need a reason to do something nice for you?"

"I came here to fuck you, you don't have to impress me." he says, eyeing the meal, realization dawning on his face. "Alfredo. "

Echo's favorite food has been fettuccine chicken alfredo with spinach since I've known him, and most likely before then. It's such a simple meal, but the way his eyes light up as he takes his first bite makes it seem Michelin star. A grin builds on his face with every bite.

"Thank you." he says, though he's still eyeing me like I'm a wild animal and I'll attack at any moment.

"Of course, I'll do anything to put that smile on your face."

He finishes chewing another bite, "Smile?" He stops then, "Oh. I guess I was."

That makes me smile. Conversation flows and I can feel it; the change. I just hope it's a good one. Echo's lips pinched closed when he's finished eating, rolling around between his teeth.

"What's wrong?"

"I can't bottom tonight, Callum."

I stare at him blankly. I'm closeted, not stupid. "What? Oh my god. I had no idea. How will I survive? Everyone knows penetration is the only way to have sex."

"Oh shut up," he laughs lightly before sombering, "I just… I came here for sex. This isn't that.

"Can't we hangout too, does there have to be an ulterior motive? I feel like this is backwards." I chuckle

"You do have ulterior motives." he says pointedly.

"Maybe, but making you happy has nothing to do with earning your forgiveness. I'll strive to do that until I'm dead and buried Echo, forgiveness or not. And even then, I know that doesn't guarantee having you. I'll accept whatever our fate is; as long as you're apart of my life."

His demeanor changes. Another shift.

"I. have to… go."

"What?"

He stands so quickly, his chair nearly falls before I catch it.

"Echo!" I yell after him. Is he fucking running?

I right the chair and try to follow him, but he's out the door and in his car before I hit the bottom of the driveway.

What. The. Fuck. Just happened?

Echo

Oh fuck. Oh fuck. I'm such an idiot. My heart is beating so hard I lay a hand on my chest to keep it in.
