“You’re not having green tea, Ani.”

My eyes rolled.

Liam spun around, eyes smoldering with authority. “I saw that.”

“Sawwhat?”

He merely smirked while turning back to the cabinet where he kept an ample collection of tea. After rattling off a few—raspberry, chamomile, prickly pear—I settled on prickly pear with a slice of lemon and a dash of brown sugar. As soon as it was brewed, I leaned over the cup, inhaling the wondrous scent of it.

In came another scent, one from yesterday that was too familiar at this point.

Leather and spice.

Some distant impression surfaced then. At some point last night, I had asked Liam if he was wearing cologne. He said no. Or at least I remembered that he said no. I got the senseit was an odd question for him, though I wasn’t sure why that would be odd.

I lifted the mug to my lips, taking a light sip of the brew. The citrus was divine and made me feel like my entire world was at peace. Granted, that was a long shot, but it was a nice ideal, right? I could always aim for the moon and land among the stars.

Or whatever people said when they found out they were mostly ordinary.

Liam took a seat beside me with a mug of his own. By the smell of it, raspberry.

I smiled nervously. “No coffee for you?”

“What you eat is what I eat.”

“You can’t be serious.”

His grin was bright and genuine. “I’m not drinking alcohol or coffee until you’ve fulfilled your contract.”

Some of his brightness diminished. That was strange too. And it made me wonder if maybe he was feeling the same impending doom I felt upon hearing him make that statement.

Until you’ve fulfilled your contract.

Well, that had been the plan all along. We were contractually bound, simple as that. Even if I did find him interesting past this initial stage, our only connecting factor was the fact that I was giving birth to his baby.

Eventually. If I was pregnant at all.

The nausea made me think so, but it was too early to tell.

I offered him another small smile as I cradled my mug. “I appreciate your commitment.”

“When I set my sights on something I want, I always get it.”

“Is that true for people too?”

My inner critic reappeared in time to be silenced by Liam’s penetrating gaze.

He rested his hand casually on the table next to mine. So close. “You sure can read me like a book.”

“I’d like to know more about you, if I’m going to stay here.”

“You can ask me anything.”

I tried not to keep smiling. It was starting to hurt my cheeks. “When are we going back to my apartment?”

“Somebody’s eager.”

“I just want to know so I can plan for the day.”
