He nodded thoughtfully and focused on his tea. “Later this afternoon. I have a meeting with a buddy of mine. We’re going to handle things.”

“Handle things?”

“That’s all you need to know, soldier.”

I felt a twitch in my gut that made me press my thighs together. “Were you in the Army?”

“Something like that.”

“Is that why you’re good at making people disappear?”

His eyes grew distant and then he was across the room in seconds. He managed the dishes in the sink, the pans, the silverware, meticulously putting everything in the dishwasher. “I’ll get this fixed up. You can go watch TV in the living room.”

“There’s no TV in there, Liam.”

“I’ll get you one.”

I chuckled under my breath. “Just like that?”

“Yes, Ani. Just like that.”

I stared at his backside, having zero complaints about scoping out his upper back muscles, the curve of his biceps, and the taut roundness of his bottom. Under his joggers were undoubtedly carved thighs and shaped calves. His leg strength was probably incredible.

He’s probably got great endurance considering he didn’t sweat one drop last night after that fight.

My stomach did a backflip, sending me into the other room where my cat was pawing at the door. Shoot, I hadn’t brought his litter box or anything. We couldn’t wait until the afternoon. I didn’t want him to hold his business like that.

Reluctantly, I scooped him up and carried him to the back door. After making sure the yard was fenced, I let him outside, watching carefully as he inspected the porch and then the steps.

It was temporary. It was all temporary.

Feelings included.

Chapter 9 - Liam

Folders were stacked high on my desk located near my bathroom door. Papers were strewn about with various notes, mostly illegible. My laptop sat in the middle of the mountainous heap as I used a mouse to click through police records on the screen. Too much pressure would crush the mouse under my palm.

A lot like Anita.

I had to be careful how much she saw. Anything could tip her over the edge. That was bad for her body—and for my baby.

The screen loaded with another report. I pitched my voice over my right shoulder to Fred who was standing behind me. “B-and-E.”

“That makes four now.”

“He’s got stalking on here too. A dozen noise complaints.”Click. Click.“Two bar fights that happened recently back in Charleston.”

Fred tapped the tablet in his hand. I’d managed to convince him to upgrade some of his tech. For now. “Yeah, Jermaine told me he skimmed the surface of Martin’s record.”

“It’s impressive.”

“Any other pending charges? Lawsuits? Restraining orders?”

I frowned through a few more clicks. “Nope.”

“That’s surprising. Didn’t you say he threatened Anita?”

“I don’t have much proof of that.”
