Fred leaned forward, his face next to mine to get a better look at the screen. “You know, if we were usingmysetup, we could—”

“I swear to the goddess, Freddy.”

“Only your sister gets to call me that.”

I shrugged him off. Playfully. For the most part. “Respectfully, eat shit.”

“After you, sir.”

“Did your black market connect bring up anything?”

Fred sighed as he tapped the tablet again, a few locks of white hair falling into his eyes. “Nah, the guy hasn’t touched anything past the legal belts. I don’t even think he’s aware of our existence.”

“It should stay that way.”

“We could scare him.”

I turned back to the laptop, staring at the screen until it turned into a pixelated blur. I blinked my vision back to normal. “No, we need to keep this as clean as possible. I don’t want anything to get traced back to us. This guy is clearly unpredictable.”

“He’s definitely predictable.”

“How so?”

He held up the tablet to point to the notes he’d been taking. “He’s obsessed with Anita. We can track and control him using that information.”

“You mean by using Anita.”

The words soured in my mouth instantly. I hated the way they tasted leaving my lips. It was a horrible thing to vocalize, and already something I knew to be a long-lasting lesson.

Fred’s expression darkened. “I don’t want either of us to go down that road again.”

“Never again.”

“Alright, so he’s not predictable.”

I hung my head, a huge chunk of my hair swooping right over my forehead that I didn’t bother to push aside. Solitary giggles bubbled from downstairs accompanied by canned laughter from a sitcom.

Sighing, I lifted my head. “Thanks for the TV, by the way.”

“Yeah, I had a bunch in storage. I never use them.”

“How could you say that? Those flat screens would probably go for a grand each. Easy.”

He chuckled. “Don’t tell Kylie about it.”

“Already keeping secrets from my sister? Bad move, dude.”

“It’s not like how you haven’t told her about Anita.”

I frowned. “That’s completely different. This is a temporary and delicate situation that needs to be—”

“Calm down. I get it.” He waved me off. “It needs to be handled quietly. I know.”

“Don’t argue with me, man.” His lips flattened to a line while his eyes glittered with mischief. “Smiling without smiling again, I see.”

“I don’t smile.”

“Kylie says you do when you’re alone with her.”
