Once the collection was done, she disposed of the needles in a sharps container hanging above the counter and gave me a reassuring smile. “I’ll just be a few minutes. Liam, would you mind joining me in the hallway briefly?”

I rubbed Anita’s arm as I passed her and stepped into the hallway with the founder of the clinic. “What can I do for you, Patricia?”

She resolutely closed the door while palming the vial of blood. “May I ask if there’s anything going on between you two?”

“Nothing other than friendship.”

“And you’re aware of the contract you signed forbidding you two to have a relationship outside of the clinic, right?”

I nodded numbly. “Absolutely.”

She eyed me carefully before tucking her clipboard under her arm. “There are occasions, Liam, where some human surrogates form…feelings during the insemination process. It’s entirely normal for her to be infatuated with you to a certain extent.”

Fear laced my heart, making it difficult to breathe. “What are you trying to say?”

“I’m saying that shifter DNA mixing with human DNA isn’t an exact science. There’s a lot we still don’t entirely understand.” She pondered her own statement for a secondbefore adding, “I think if I were in her position, I would want to know what kind of baby I’m about to have.”

“Are you saying I should tell her I’m a shifter?”

She met my gaze confidently. “Her labs are entirely normal for a human. But a second glance showed me some mild abnormalities.”

I frowned. “What kind of abnormalities?”

“Well, they’re abnormal for a human who has no knowledge of the supernatural world. It seems she might have been exposed to some kind of magic at some point.”

“Is it dangerous?”

She gave me another sympathetic frown as she shrugged. “I don’t know for sure. I think it’s mostly harmless. But given the circumstances, it would be a good idea for her to know all the facts. We don’t want her thinking something is wrong if she happens to give birth earlier than the average nine months, for example.”

“Do you think that’s something the magic would do?”

“It’s very possible.”

My left hand tingled. I wanted to get back into the room, get back to this woman who had been so brave at every twist and turn.

I bowed my head to Patricia. “Thank you for the warning. I’ll tell her what’s going on after we get the results.”

“Thank you, Liam. It might be hard, but it’ll be better in the long term.”

After a reassuring pat to my shoulder, she walked past me, leaving me in silence next to the exam room door. I took a few breaths, steadying my hand on the doorknob while thinking about how to break the news to Anita about shifters. If Patricia was right about magic exposure, then it was entirely possible that she was subconsciously aware of the supernatural.

That would make things easier.

One more breath calmed me before I opened the door and returned to Anita’s side. She gave me a long look, assessing me with those brilliant amber spotlights that made me want to embrace her. And kiss her. And hold her.

And many other things.

I took her hand. “It’ll just be a few more minutes.”

She jerked her eyes to the door when a knock sounded. The way she squeezed my hand when Patricia walked in made my heart thud loudly.

“The procedure was a success,” Patricia announced proudly. “Congratulations, Anita. You’re pregnant.”

Anita whimpered while clutching my hand. She sniffled, took a sharp breath, and then laughed nervously. “I’m so happy to hear that.Wow. What a relief.”

“We’ll set up an appointment for four weeks from today to do your first ultrasound,” Patricia explained. She turned to me. “Would you like to be present for that?”

I didn’t miss the way her gaze flickered to my occupied hand. But she didn’t stare for long and met my gaze with a professional grin as she waited for my response.
