I nodded. “Of course.”

Anita giggled while shaking my hand. “I can’t wait.”

Despite Patricia’s suspicions and the way she watched us, I felt in my heart how much I couldn’t wait either.

Anita talked my right ear to pieces the whole way home. She had a plan for everything—her diet, her exercise for the duration of her pregnancy, the delivery. Everything seemed to be sorted all at once as she spilled word after word, and I listened to every syllable. I absorbed each sound.

Because the excitement pouring from her was heartwarming.

After I parked in the driveway, she hopped out and bounced up the steps to the door. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other while pinching her thighs together. “Come on. I have topee.”

“Already?” I chuckled while locking the car. “You went at the clinic.”

“Well, I have to go again.”

I shook my head playfully. “Like a damn excited puppy over here.”

As soon as the door was open, she bolted inside. I drifted into the small foyer after her, shutting the door pensively behind me. My protective instincts were on high alert now. I sniffed the air, checking for any changes in the scent since we left. Nothing stood out to me aside from Memphis and his litter box.

Speaking of the prince, he waltzed into the living room with his tail up high and his slit eyes locked on me. He jumped elegantly onto the couch and sat down with a glare that dared me to tell him to get down.

But Memphis was the least of my worries. I had to tell Anita that I was a shifter and that she was going to give birth to a pup. This was going to take some tact and patience. It wasn’t like I did this every day.

The toilet flushed upstairs. The faucet ran a second later. After that, Anita reappeared with a sigh, holding her tummy as she descended the stairs. I tried to imagine her with a bigger belly—and for some reason, that image aroused me.

I gestured to the couch as she approached, trying to find the right words. Shit, it wasn’t like any of this was conventional. We were already breaking so many rules, and Patricia would catch on eventually if we kept showing up together the way we had today.

Once Anita was seated, I stood a few feet away, trying to figure out how to start. “We should talk about the baby.”

“Really? I feel like I talked enough for us both in the car.”

“That was…” I scratched my shoulder. “Well, that was assuming the baby is human.”

She arched her left brow. “I don’t think I understand what you mean.”

“There’s something about me you should know.”

She tensely leaned forward. “You’re a spy.”

“What? No.”

“You’ve been married this whole time.”

I cringed. “God,no. Anita, listen—”

“You like Memphis more than you’ve let on?”

“Ani, I’m a wolf.”

She tilted her head to the left like a confused cat. I swore I could sense a pair of ears flickering upward with curiosity as well, just like a cat would. Memphis seemed at attention on the far end of the couch. He glanced at his owner, stretched, and then daintily stepped toward her to settle into her lap.

She absently stroked his fur while snickering. “Liam…do you mean you’re an alpha male?” She grimaced. “Oh god, please tell me that’s not what you mean.”

“That’s not what I mean, Ani. I mean that I’m…”

Alright, there wasn’t any other way to do this than to justdothis. I stood in front of the mantel and shed my windbreaker, tossing it to the end of the couch. My shirt went next. I started to shuck my jeans when Anita turned into a red pepper as she waved for me to stop.
