“Yes, ma’am.”

Morgan straightened her spine and pushed her shoulders back, ready to get this over with.Morgan could see Simon pacing in her office. He looked concerned just as Jessica had said. Was he worried she was going to press charges against him?She had no intention of doing so.

“Good morning, Mr.Valentine,” she greeted him with a big false smile.“I trust you weren’t waiting long.I apologize if I forgot a meeting this morning.”

Simon looked up at her entrance.Up close, he looked more than just concerned. He looked worried about something.“We didn’t have a meeting.Morgan, I need to talk to you.” He rushed to her, reaching for her hands.

Morgan dodged around him and hid behind the safety of her desk.“I have the property listings you were looking for.”

“I’m not concerned about that.” He waved it off.

“Excuse me?That’s why you hired me.To look for a hunting property.” She had spent a lot of time looking for properties for him.It wasn’t in the area he was looking at, but she and Jessica had spent time looking for places. They had consulted realtors in the area for their expertise, and now he said he wasn’t concerned about it?

Of course, it was no consequence to him the time and hours she and Jessica had poured into their research. He didn’t concern himself with the details but left that to others.

“It was a ruse, Morgan.I don’t want a property in the woods.I told you before, I don’t like nature.”

Morgan’s mouth opened, but no words came out.She licked her lips and tried again.“I don’t understand, but you said—”

“I lied to get close to you.”

Another person had lied to her?Would there ever be just one person who told her the truth from the beginning?“For what purpose?”

“I was hoping you would lead me to Brooklyn.”

“Brooklyn?” Why was he trying to get to Brooklyn?Jameson’s tale came to mind.“You’re involved with those people Brooklyn was hiding from.”

“Yes.” He looked away from her guiltily.

Morgan stumbled back against her chair, almost falling into it.She looked around for an exit but realized she had backed herself into a corner.Simon stood between her and her only exit. She would never make it past him.

Morgan could scream for help, but Jessica was no match for him.She didn’t know if Gary was in his office yet.Would Jessica have enough time to call the police if she called out to her, or would that endanger her?

“Morgan, I don’t want to hurt you or Brooklyn,” he said, raising his hands in the air in a calming motion.

“Lawry tried to kill her.You tried to kill me.Why should I believe you?”

“I don’t want to kill anyone.” He shook his head in denial, almost looking offended she would suggest such a thing.

“Liar, Friday night,” she hissed.

Simon sighed in frustration.“Friday night I was trying to get you to come out with me.I admit I was angry when you turned me down, but I never would have hurt you.”

Morgan absently touched the bruise her blouse was concealing on her arm.He had hurt her.“Have you conveniently forgotten about putting a gun to my head?”

Simon looked at her baffled.“Gun?I never—” His eyes widened in shock before he turned his head and snarled, “Shaw.” Simon came around the desk and clasped her hands in his.She tried to pull free, but he refused to relent.“Listen to me, Morgan, this is important. You are in danger.”

“No shit, Sherlock.” She tried pulling away again, but he held firm.

“No from me.Shaw is a hired hitman. He is ruthless, and he won’t give up.” A shudder wracked through Morgan’s body.Jameson had warned her of the same thing.A flash of memory of a gun pressed to her temple surfaced. The man Simon described fit the picture. The person she’d fought and who had held a gun to her head was ruthless and enjoyed hurting people.

“What do you want from me?”

“I need you to tell me where Brooklyn and the file is.”

Jameson mentioned the file yesterday. It had information that could implicate who Mr.Banner had been working for.She didn’t know why Simon thought she knew where it was.“I don’t know.I imagine the file is in police custody. As for Brooklyn, I wouldn’t tell you even if I knew.” She would never betray her friend.Simon would have to kill her first.

Simon opened his mouth when they heard Jessica’s raised voice then gunfire rang out.Simon whirled around to face the new threat.Morgan used the distraction to dig in her purse for her phone and sent a quick text to Jameson.
