Danger.My office.Help.

She had just hit send when her door burst open and a man of similar height walked in wearing black cargo pants and a black zip-up jacket. He had a pistol in his hand, and it was aimed straight at her.

Chapter 25

“I should have known you’d be here, Simon,” Shaw said while keeping his laser focus on her.

“It doesn’t have to end this way, Shaw.” Simon held his hands up in surrender and stepped in front of her, creating a barrier between her and Shaw. She thought he was insane for standing in front of a man with a gun when he had nothing but his body to protect her.Even when Jameson fought Shaw, that had been hand-to-hand combat.

“Get out of the way, Simon,” Shaw warned, his eyes flickering up to meet Simon’s while his gun was aimed at Simon’s chest.

Morgan stood frozen behind her desk. She feared Jessica was already dead.Gary was missing.Hopefully, he was out at meetings this morning. That left her trapped in her office with two killers.Well, one hitman and she wasn’t sure what Simon was.

He had seemed genuinely concerned about her well-being.He had warned her she was in danger. That didn’t mean he wasn’t still considered the bad guy.He had hired her under false pretenses, and he was after Brooklyn. That didn’t make him a good guy in her opinion.

“Leave her be, Shaw. She doesn’t know anything.”

“Why, because you asked her, and she said no?” Shaw questioned in a sarcastic tone.

“I had her look into properties where Lawry said the girl was hiding before, and she didn’t seem to recognize the place.” He had been testing her.Maybe it was a good thing Brooklyn and Jameson hadn’t told her much until yesterday. If she had known about that town, she could have been in more danger. Not that it was saving her from having a gun aimed at her now.

“So naïve and gullible.” Shaw tsked.“You’d believe anything that woman says because you’re infatuated with her.”

“I believe her when she says she doesn’t know anything,” Simon replied evenly, not denying his romantic interest in her.

“It doesn’t matter.” Shaw shook his head.“Boss wants her out of the way.She knows too much as is.Knows we’re involved. Now, get out of the way before I remove you.Your name isn’t going to save you from me.”

Simon stood taller—as if that were possible—and centered himself in front of her.“If you want her, you’ll have to go through me.”

Shaw’s eyes narrowed into slits.“You have been a pain in my ass since this assignment started.Always getting in my way. That morning on the bridge, the bar.”

“I didn’t feel she was involved, and I was right.”

Morgan suddenly saw Shaw in a new light. She remembered him now.He had been the guy jogging on the bridge when she’d met Simon. He was the bartender at the restaurant.“You’ve been trying to kill me for almost a week now.” It sickened her to know someone had been trying to kill her for so long, and she’d only learned about it Friday night.

Shaw glowered at the reminder it had taken him so long to complete his assignment.“Your boy hero here kept getting in my way.Even that cop boyfriend of yours.” Shaw’s lips turned up into a sinister grin.“No one can save you in the end, though.”

“I won’t let you hurt her.” Simon squared his shoulders, ready to go head-to-head with Shaw for her.

Morgan screamed when the gun went off again and covered her mouth.Simon groaned in pain, bending over at the waist before falling to the ground.A pool of blood was already forming under him.

“Now you get to watch me kill her.” Shaw turned the gun back on her.Morgan looked around her desk frantically for a weapon, anything, but there was nothing she could use to protect herself from the distance between them.

The gun went off again.Morgan waited for the pain.Something.Anything.But there was nothing.Shaw grimaced in pain.Simon lay on the floor with a pistol in his hand aimed up at Shaw.

Shaw turned on him and kicked the gun from Simon’s loose grip.“Your father will be disappointed when he learns of your betrayal,” Shaw said standing over him.“You were never fit to lead anyway.Such a waste.”

“No,” Morgan screamed and charged at Shaw. The gun went off, but he missed his target.Shaw snarled at her and backhanded her with the butt of the gun.Morgan went flying and hit the corner of her desk. Her vision winked in and out.She used the desk to help herself stay up.A hand grabbed her shoulder and whipped her around.

The barrel of the gun was pressed to her temple.Morgan could see the fury blazing in Shaw’s eyes. The man obviously enjoyed hurting people.“As much as I would like to drag this out for being the pain in the ass you are,” his eyes traveled down her chest, making his meaning clear, “I’ve wasted enough time on you.Your little friend Brooklyn, though, won’t be so lucky.I’m looking forward to hearing her screams.” He smiled cold and sardonically.

“If you so much as lay a hand on her—” Morgan started to threaten.

“You’ll what?” Shaw chuckled.“You’re going to be dead in a moment, so your threat is wasted.Say goodbye, Morgan.”

Morgan reached back blindly and grabbed the first heavy object she found on her desk and brought it across his face.It was her red stapler.Shaw backed away when she cracked him across the face again. He covered his face with his free hand and started firing blindly.Morgan crouched down and darted behind her desk.

Shaw grunted in pain, and she heard things rolling around on the ground, and then there was silence.Morgan remained crouched behind her desk, afraid to peek out to the scene that would greet her.Was Shaw just waiting for her to lift her head to put a bullet in it?“Morgan.”
