Simon didn’t appear off-put by her words. He smirked as if he found them humorous.“I’ve never met anyone like you, Morgan.”

“Someone that doesn’t fawn all over you because you have money,” she remarked teasingly.

“Yes,” he replied impenitently.

“You should have known me better than that.”

“I’d like to if you’ll let me.” Back to this already.“As friends.”

“Friends,” she said in disbelief but started thinking about it.The man had saved her life.Even if he started out with nefarious plans.

“I don’t have any, and you only have one,” he added as if she needed the reminder.

“It’s kind of hard to be friends when you’ll be in jail and I’ll be here.”

“Pssh,” he waved her off, “I’ll be out of jail in a jiffy.” He looked at her imploringly.“So is that a yes to my offer?”

“I’ll think about it.” She wasn’t convinced his name and money was going to get him out of a jail sentence, but she was sure he’d try.Morgan wasn’t sold on being friends with him either, but he was bleeding and had saved her, so she gave him a little hope.

“Thank you, Morgan.I know I can come across a little—”

“Abrasive,” she supplied.

“I like it, but I never meant anything untoward about it.”

“Let me through.I want to see her.” Morgan would know that shrill voice anywhere.

“Brooklyn.” Morgan’s eyes darted around looking for her friend and already forgetting about Simon.

“Morgan!” Brooklyn appeared between a group of people and threw herself at her friend.

Chapter 26

“What are you doing here?” Morgan asked in disbelief that her friend was here. She was supposed to be hiding somewhere.Brooklyn had refused to tell her last night, and she hadn’t pressed.

“Drake and I got back into town this morning.I wanted to be here when they put that man away.” Brooklyn glared at Simon who was being carted away.

“You shouldn’t be here. It’s dangerous.” She wasn’t going to tell her friend what Shaw had planned for her.

“Drake would never let anything happen to me.” Brooklyn waved her words off as if it had been something trivial.Something Brooklyn never would have done before meeting Drake.Brooklyn had found her backbone with him, and Morgan couldn’t be happier for her friend.“This place is swarming with cops.No one would try anything right now.”

“No, but—”

“Morgan,” Brooklyn cut her off.“I’m fine.We caught the bad guys.I don’t have to be in hiding anymore.I can go back to a normal life.”

No more Jameson or his people shadowing her.Her gaze looked around for him and found him talking with an officer hauling Shaw away.

“Are you going to forgive him?”

Morgan didn’t ask who ‘him’ was, she knew.“I don’t know.I’m upset that he’s been lying to me, but apparently, that was what kept me alive with Simon, not knowing. It’s hard to be mad about that.”

It was scary to think two men had been plotting her murder. While Simon hadn’t wanted to, if she had possessed any knowledge of what was in the file or knew where Brooklyn was hiding, she would have been killed.

Jameson had been right to keep her in the dark, not that she would have told him that.He could have at least told her a little bit so she was informed.

“I still can’t help but feel your involvement was my fault. If I hadn’t been on the phone with you that night…” Brooklyn looked off as her hands clutched Morgan’s arms.

“Hey, none of this is your fault. If you want to blame anyone, blame Banner. He’s the one that got you involved in the first place.” The asshole had left the file, to begin with, and started this snowball effect.
