“Whatever you choose to call it. I’m your favorite.” He sounded like there was good news he couldn’t wait to tell me.

“Dad! Open the door!”

“Hold on, son. You remember what happens to a patient dog?” I made my way to the door.

“It gets the fattest bone, Dad. But I’m not a dog.” He threw off my proverb.

I finally got to the door and opened it.

“Damn right, you’ren’t. You’re my boy.” I picked him up and threw him over my shoulder.

He screamed like he didn’t like it, but he was giggling and clinging to me.

“Put me down! Put me down!”

I clutched to him and allowed him slowly to escape my grip.

“I won! I escaped.” He bragged.

“That’s my boy.” I opened my palm for a high five, and he slammed his palm into mine. “Have you brushed?” I asked.

His jubilation seized suddenly. “Dad, I don’t want to…” I didn’t wait for him to finish.

“…first person to finish brushing will get the biggest breakfast,” I said fondly and ran off to the bathroom. Michael didn’t waste another second complaining. He shot off.

“I’ll beat you, Dad. You better not cheat.”

My face lightened up with a smile. I loved my son so much; that I’d do anything to keep him safe and provide for him. He was the only family I’d left.

In no time, he was back. “I won! I won! I won!” He sang loudly. My toothbrush was still going up and down my mouth and he had finished brushing already.

“Okay, a deal is a deal,” I smiled. “You’ll have the biggest share of breakfast.”

Watching him so happy was so fun to see. A smile coated my face while I continued brushing. Soon we were done brushing and cleaning up, and we were ready for the day, so we both headed downstairs for breakfast.

“Dad!” Michael called out, and I looked at him to show he had my attention. “You normally wouldn’t be in the house for this long. You’d normally be rushing to get to work. What’s different today?” he asked.

He was a smart boy, and he observed everything.

“How would you like Dad to stay home with you today?” I asked him.

“That would be great!” He exclaimed. “So… will you stay home with me today?” He asked in anticipation. His eyes lit up, and I could tell he wanted to hear a yes from me.

“Even better!” I whispered in his ear.

“Tel me! Tell me, Dad.” He jumped up and down.

“We’re going grocery shopping together!” I said loudly.

“Yay!” He was so excited. I could tell he couldn’t wait.

“Now, let’s have breakfast.” I walked behind him.

Soon, we were eating, and as I promised, he had the larger share.

“Cindy!” He yelled as the caregiver walked in.

“Mike!” She called out with a smile on her face. “Good morning, sir.” She greeted me.
