“Good morning, Cindy.” I thought to invite her for breakfast, but Michael took it out of my mouth.

“Come and have breakfast with us.” He was sounding super thrilled this morning, more so after the grocery announcement.

“Okay, Mike. I’ll gladly join you.” Cindy dropped her bag and served herself. Then she joined us at the table.

“Sir…” She looked suspicious. “…you’re… you’re still home?”

“Yes, my daddy’s not going to work today. He’s going to the grocery store with me.” Michael stole the words off my mouth. “We’re going to have fun!” He added.

I sighed with a bit of chuckling. My hands on my spoon and fork, I kept on eating. Cindy looked at me for confirmation. I nodded and gave her the confirmation she needed.

“That’s so nice of you sir.” She smiled. She sounded like she had waited for this day for a long time.

“Thank you. Michael and I’ven’t had much father-and-son time of late. So, this will be a good day for that.”

Cindy smiled and stuffed her mouth with food, while Michael was happily dancing to imaginary music. I watched them and felt fulfilled for some reason.

Soon, we were done with the food and well-rested. Cindy didn’t have any need to stay since I was home with Michael all day. She left to return the next day.

“Son! Are you ready?” I called out from the living room. Michael was picking what to wear.

“I’m coming.” He said loudly. He ran out of his room, suspending two shirts from his hand. “Dad, this one or this one?”

I picked the one on his right.

“Okay!” He ran back in and came out well-dressed. “We can go now.”

“Is there a girl you’re trying to impress at the store?” I said, smiling.

“Dad!” He said and threw his face away.

I knew something was up. “Is she cute?” I asked, urging him to shyly run out the door.

We got into my truck, and I turned the ignition on.

“Okay! Okay, you don’t want to talk about it. I get it.” I matched on the accelerator to leave the yard.

I watched him struggle for a while to either speak up or keep it hidden.

“You know you can talk to me, son.” I tried to make him feel comfortable.

“I don’t think she likes me as much as I like her.” He finally spoke up.

I saw the pain in his eyes. It reminded me of the old days when I met his mom. I got lost in thought for a while, taking my mind back to the blissful moment of when love was the best thing I’d.

“Dad!” He called me out of my thoughts. I smiled at him—at least the love I’d with his mom gave me him. Since he was born, he’d been the best thing I’d.

“Michael,” I said in the same tone he used with me.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?” He asked.

“Oh! I… am sorry.” I stuttered a bit. “One thing you should know about ladies is…” I started advising my son as though I knew anything about ladies myself. “…you must be bold. Girls don’t like boys who are not confident. That’s the first step.” I added.

He smiled. I saw it on his face that he was happy. We both shared a smile and a quiet drive until we got to the grocery store. “We’re here!” I sighed.

We got into the grocery store, grabbed a cart, and started rolling it through to pick up things we needed.

“Dad, buy this!” He picked a carton and threw it into the cart.
