I voiced out in between. “Hello?”
“Is this Ben?” he asked.
“Yes, Ben.” I was curious. I didn’t want to expect any bad news, so I composed myself and spoke well.
“I’m the manager from the store you just left. We just…” he continued talking.
“…just what? Have you found him?” I asked impatiently.
“Yes, we found your son.” He said.
This changed my whole state. “Where? Is he okay?” I needed to know this at least, as my heart began to race.
“But…” he said as if something was up.
“But what?” I asked. I was agitated.
“You know, we…” he stuttered.
“Talk to me!” I yelled.
“He’s having an asthma attack.” He said.
“What!” I jumped off the floor and rushed to Michael’s room.
“Is it severe?” I asked.
“Yes, it is.” He said.
While the manager was explaining things calmly to me, I heard someone yell: “Get here now, your son is having an attack.”
“Put the phone on loudspeaker. Who’s the lady I just heard?” I asked.
“She found your son. She’s the one taking care of him now.” The manager said and then put the phone on loudspeaker so the lady could hear what I was saying.
“Where are you guys now?” I asked.
“At the store, you just left. Come back here now.” She responded. She was commanding.
“Okay, I’ll be on my way,” I said.
I ran out of the house with two inhalers.There was one in the car, but I needed to have as many as possible, mostly it was my anxiety working.
The lady didn’t say anything more for a while, but the call was still on.
Then she said, “Ben?”
“Yes, it’s me. I’m on my way now.” I responded, and I started my truck. Then, the call ended.
I drove straight to the store and was told that she had taken him to the hospital. I got to the hospital and ran straight to the first nurse I saw.
“Hi,” I was breathing heavily.
“Hi,” she responded softly.
“I’m here for my son!” My voice sounded like loud whispers. She didn’t hear a thing I said. I was panting and talking.
“You’re going to have to calm down and talk to me, sir,” she beckoned me to be calm. “Now, how may I help you?” She asked.
