I tried to be calm. “My son was brought in here a few minutes ago for an asthma attack,” I said.

“Oh yes, Michael?” She asked.

“Yes, that’s him,” I responded.

“Yes, your wife went with him into the sick room.” She said.

“My wife?” I asked myself but she heard me.

“Yes, his mother. You can go there now. They’re there.” She insisted.

I don’t believe she knew what she was talking about. I didn’t have a wife and Michael’s mother left too long ago to return at that time. I slowly walked to the room and then went inside.

My mind couldn’t comprehend what met my eyes.

“Olivia!” I was shocked. She raised her head and looked at me. I didn’t notice a shock on her face.

I met her sitting beside my son with his hands clutched tightly with hers.

“Dad!” Michael called out.

“Hey, son.” I gave him my attention immediately.

I walked up to him and kissed him on the forehead. He could manage to lift his hands, so we did our handshake and he smiled. I was relieved. I enjoyed the smile on his face.

“I’m here for you… always.” I assured him.

“He’s a smart boy,” Olivia said. She was smiling at Michael.

I turned to face her. “Yes, He is.” I sat close to Michael and rubbed him. He was relaxed. He usually wouldn’t be this relaxed with just anybody.

It took weeks for him to get used to Cindy and it’s just been a few hours since he met Olivia. How they got that close, and he got that relaxed with her was a shock to me.

“How’d you do it?” I asked.

“Do what? How’d I do what?” She asked for clarity.

“How’d you get him to like you?” I buttressed. “He usually doesn’t get this relaxed with people.

It took about two weeks before he got used to his nanny.” I added.

“I don’t know. We just connected in the grocery store.” She responded. “He walked up to me, and we talked.

He spoke to me as if he knew me from somewhere. He was very energetic and smart. I couldn’t resist his charm.” She kept on talking. “He even gave me a lesson he learned from his father.”

That last line intrigued me. “Why was his advice?” I chuckled.

“He said, his dad said, ‘everyone needs someone’.” Olivia quoted my son. “I can’t even doubt that now.” She added.

“You don’t believe everyone needs someone?” I asked.

“How could I not believe what came from such an adorable strong young boy?” she said.

I turned and saw that Michael was fast asleep. “He must’ve gone through a lot today,” I said.

“That’s for sure. He’s such a fighter.” She started. “I was so worried that I’d lose a friend on the first day we met, but he fought his way through it. I admire his courage and will to live. That’s something I don’t even have.” She looked at Michael and then let his gaze fall on me.

“I can tell where he got it from.” She added.
