“I’m sorry, I was just catching up with someone I know.” Olivia sighed and entered the truck. She looked around. “Mmmm, nice.” She smiled and nodded her head.

“I don’t need a prophet to tell me these stickers are Michael’s.” She chuckled.

Michael laughed and said, “You guessed right.”

We all laughed, and Olivia shut the door.

“Shall we?” I said and sighed while I took glances at everyone in the truck.

“We shall!” Michael and Olivia chorused.

I inserted the key and turned on the ignition. The engine rumbled to life with a deep growl. My hands gripped the steering wheel as I released the clutch slowly. Feeling the vehicle's power, I shifted into gear. With a gentle touch on the accelerator, I set forth on the open road.

I stole glances at Olivia at intervals and didn’t say a word. She didn’t talk to me, either, even if I caught her stealing glances at me. The silence was awkward. I could imagine what was in her mind. The problem could be the kiss, but I didn’t think it to be much of a problem.

Maybe I’d been lying to myself because I felt the tension between us both. My heart raced faster, and my blood pumped hard like I had just finished a 100-meter race. The cab was hotter than usual, and her touch was the only cold and comforting thing I felt.

I couldn’t forget the way I felt when I was with her in the hospital room and outside when we stepped out. It was a feeling of a lifetime, but it was better to take it slow. So, I waved the thought of the kiss aside.

Olivia didn’t let the thought go. I could read her thoughts like they were written on her forehead. Her facial expression was tense, and she tried to fake smiles to cover it up.

“Dad?” Michael called out and broke the silence.

“Son,” I responded.

“Are you going to say anything, or you both will just keep staring at each other and pretending you’re not looking?” He asked.

The boy was smart, but I never knew he was watching us. I cleared my throat and tried to make him believe he was seeing things, but I implicated myself the more. My actions were suspicious, even for the nine-year-old.

“Son, you’re seeing things... I… I was… focusing on the road.” I stuttered.

Olivia laughed at me. I took up my phone and passed it to the boy.

“Hey! Take my phone. You can play games, watch movies, or anything.” I said.

He mumbled and collected the phone from me.

“Good!” I said and panted my focus on the road, and we stayed quiet for a while.

“Slow down here, I’ll be coming up soon.” Olivia broke the silence.

I slowed down and waited for her word so I’d stop.

“Here!” She said, pointing to a house nearby. “This is me.” She said.

I stopped and she jumped off, waving us goodbye. I watched her enter the house, and then I drove off, heading to our house. The day was longer than we expected, a good night’s sleep would be worth it.

CHAPTER 13

Olivia

As I approached the house, its moderate yet beautiful exterior caught my eye, blending seamlessly with the lush surroundings. The soft color palette and well-maintained garden exuded a sense of tranquility. Anyone could tell Ben was rich. A cobblestone pathway led to the inviting front door, adorned with a quaint wreath.

I was about to knock on the wooden door before it opened almost immediately. I met a female face.

“Hello.” I was forced to say this as a response to my temporary moment of surprise.

“Hi. Olivia?” She asked in a subtle voice that hinted she’d heard about me. It wasn’t like she needed any reply to her question, as she stood on one side of the door to direct me inside the house.
