“Thank you,” I muttered, before humbly stepping into the house.

Upon entering, a cozy ambiance enveloped me, embracing me like an old friend. The living room was bathed in natural light, its warm hues casting a soothing glow. Comfortablefurniture was arranged thoughtfully, while tasteful artwork adorned the walls, adding a personal touch.

Before I could fully take in the atmosphere, a joyful shout filled the air, and my little friend came bounding towards me. With a smile on his face and gleaming eyes, his excitement was obvious. His tight embrace exuded warmth, a true embodiment of a heartfelt welcome. Michael was such a joy.

“Make yourself at home, please. I’ll be right back.” She addressed me, seeing how Michael was already comfortable with me.

“Okay.”

I sat down on a nearby cushion. The aroma of freshly baked cookies lingered close by. The house celebrated a scent of delectable treats, a testament to the thoughtfulness of my friend.

“I like cookies!” Michael was jumpy. He was so excited to see me.

“I bet you do!” I started emptying my bag. There was no way I’d visit a young boy and not have things for him. “Guess what?” I said.

“What?!” He asked excitedly.

“I said you should guess,” I said. I stopped unpacking.

He pressed his finger between his teeth and raised his eyebrow while he hummed for a few seconds. I smiled and watched him rack his brain to come up with a smooth guess.

“Just guess anything. There’s no failing here.” I chucked.

He giggled. “Really?” he asked.

“Yes.” I laughed.

He tried to snoop in my bag and see what was in it. I covered it and we both laughed.

“Okay, okay!” he said and went into thinking again. It wasn’t a minute when he said, “You’ve brought a gift for my Daddy!”

I laughed and he joined me.

“You’re wrong,” I said and continued laughing. “Do you want me to tell you?”

He was cheerful. He started shouting. “Tell me! Tell me!”

I was pushed to end the suspense. “I brought you candy!” I yelled with joy and a giggling voice.

Michael screamed out of joy. He ran around and was giggling hard. I brought the candy out and handed it to him.

“Here you go!” I gave the bag of candy to Michael.

He collected it with a smile on his face. “Thank you. Olivia.” He said. “Woah!” His eyes widened. He saw how much it was. “Can I eat all of it? There’s so much!”

“You don’t have to finish it today. You can save some for tomorrow.” I advised.

“Now, where’s your father?” I asked and looked around.

“My Daddy’s not in the house. He left very early for the ranch.” He said.

“Oh!” I paused. I was a bit disappointed. I thought I’d see him, but I’ didn’t.

“When will he return?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” Michael spread his hands open and lifted his shoulder to touch his ear.

The woman who opened the door for me earlier came out again. In her hands was a tray of some freshly baked cookies and a jar of milk.
